Check out the DISabilities board for more info on this subject.

We rented from Care Medical for my mom (on recommendation from the DISabilites section), and were pleased with the service. It was very affordable and worked out great! The scooter was waiting at the resort when we arrived. My only complaint was that this style of scooter, was more difficult to drive than some others we have rented in the past (it was more difficult to stop).

The ones at the park can't be taken out of the parks and there's an awful lot of walking you have to do outside of the parks. They're also very expensive to rent every day.
Last year I hired one from Randy's and found it very good and excellent value for money.

They delivered it at the beginning of the stay and at the end we just left it in reception and they collected it after we left. I got caught in a rainstorm one day and the scooter stopped working but we just rang Randy's and they came to replace it very quickly and no charge.

My cousin orders hers from Walker Mobility. They deliver and pick it up so you have it 24/7. If you have any problems, they care of it pronto. On our last trip, the front wheel fell of my cousin's scooter while I was riding Star Tours.:rotfl2: She called and the guy brought her another scooter in about 30 minutes. The poor guy had to put a strap around it and drag it back out to his truck.

can you rent the ECVs for children.... my friends son has major back/neck problems and can only walk for about an hour or so then he is in a lot of pain. if not do disney allow you to bring your own ECV into the park?

He will probably have to be pushed in a wheel chair. You can rent them also at Walker.

Scootarama was a lifesaver for our last trip with my ankle injury.

DH did the research and ordered a Pride Revo - highly recommend. It breaks down so you can easily put it into your trunk.

Even on a good/healthy trip we do not use the bus system at Disney - our rental car is so much faster and more pleasant. With a handicapped tag you will have access to parking areas close to the parks and free valet at the hotels.

It was a dream....and the Pride Revo was GREAT!

Take decorations and make it fun!

I had mine decorated for Christmas along with a bike bell and little pink horn.

companies will not rent to people under 18, including at disney.

A child could not operate a scooter safely. among other things, he would have to sit all the way back in the seat to help with the back problems, but doing so, he would not be able to reach the tiller! i am a small adult and I cannot use those things!

their best bet would be to rent a wheelchair...

They're also very expensive to rent every day.
.

The onsite ones I think are $45 per day. the offsite ones are, I think $40 a day at most places. If you are staying a full week, some places will know off about $10 from that rate for a full week if ordered in advance. I'm not sure I qualify the price difference as very large.

So the price isn't THAT dramatic if you are iffy about needing one. The real advantage of using an offsite place is that it is dropped off at your resort, so you know you'll have one very day. If you rent at teh parks, there is no guarentee they won't run out if you are going at a busy time. They do get all rented out.

Teh DISADVANTAGE , perhpas of renting from an offsite place is that you have to transport the scooter to the parks. Most folks don't mind, but some folks find it difficult to maneuver a scooter onto the buses in particular. Drving to the parks witha scooter may be out entirely.

You can rent a version like the one mentioned, that can be taken a part to fit in a car, but you'll have to take it apart, have a someone load it, and put it back together again.

I don't know about Universal per say.

the other advantage/disadvantge of various options is teh kind of scooter you get. There are different models. Teh ones WDW uses can handle all body types. Whereas, an offsite place may be able to give youa more compact model if you wiegh under 250 lbs. (I think that was the cutoff range). Now, one more thing....the folding kind - i.e. the most compact models also - in my experience - have the least power. That could be good or bad, depending on your experience level and ability to control motorized scooters, and how commando your touring style is.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #2 wil give you just about all of the information that you need about wheelchairs and ECVs.

Or, if you want an easier route, click on the link in my signature.

Answering your first question. No, they cannot be pre-orderred at either Disney or Universal, however the FAQs referred to above give rental informaiton, including off-site.

There is one off-site rental, Randy's, which will allow someone under 18 to drive provided they demonstrate that they are capable of driving the ECV.

And Disney (as well as Universal and Sea World) alllow people of any age to drive their own.

Agreeing with all the other things Cheshire Figment wrote and adding a little to this advice.....
Randy's may agree to rent for use by a teen, especially an older teen, but as Cheshire Figment mentioned, Randy's will determine when they deliver it whether the child is capable and responsible to drive an ECV.
If the child is physically small, as KPeveler mentioned, the ECV may be too large to be driven safely. And, if it is a younger teen, it is unlikely the child will be mature and responsible enough to drive it.

I rented from Walker Mobility in Feb and will again this week. It was only 30/day. And they deliver the night before at no charge and you dont have to give it back to the morn after. So for Fri, sat, and Sun they will deliver Thurs night and you return it to your front desk Mon. morn. All for $30/day!

Per day, there may or may not be much of a difference.

Per hour, on the other hand... :teeth: A $45 rental for twelve hours costs $3.75 an hour; at $30 rental for 24 hours costs $1.25

You must be 18yo to operate an ECV in Disney World.
Not True! You must be 18 to RENT one from WDW. there is no age requirement for your own personally owned one as confirmed by Cheshire

bolding is mine...

Well I respectfully disagree about the price difference. renting one in the parks for 7 days at $45/day is $315 for a week. I can only speak for Walkers but their weekly rate last yr was $225. That's a $90 difference. To Me, that is a significant difference, almost 30% cheaper. And keep in mind that if you decide to park hop or go back to your resort, they may or may not have one available for you at the other park or upon your return. Depending on which resort you're staying at you could need one there too. Just my .02. good luck with your decision though. :goodvibes

I just rented a scooter from Apple Scooter in Orlando for my husband. We rented it for 10 days at an average of approximately $23.50 per day. This is the first time I have ever rented from this company but it was a very smooth transaction my credit card will not be charged until the scooter is delivered. The gentleman's name I spoke with was Alex and he was very knowledgeable. He informed me that the Wheel Victory 10 scooter I rented would run three days before having to be charged and these scooters are 2009 models that they just began renting this year. He also tells me that this scooter is a Superior Ride with Deluxe comfort. I will let you know how well it actually runs and if we have any problems in September. :thumbsup2

No one has given any feedback about this company that I am aware of. Sounds good so far, so I hope it turns out as well as it started.

That looks like a very nice scooter.
I did look at the information file about it. That does say that the scooter will go about 25 miles before needing charging - whether you get that or less depends on a number of things, including the weight the scooter is carrying, the speed and conditions (like are you on a lot of hills, etc.). I would suggest watching the battery indicator carefully the first day to see how far it goes down. A lot of whether you will be able to get 3 days on it or not will depend on how much driving around you do.
Some people estimate they walk about 6 miles per day; that person would get 3 days.
Some other people estimate they walk about 11 miles per day; that person would run out of power before without getting very far into the 3rd day.

We always recharge the scooter at the end of every day, so we aren't too concerned about the battery lasting for three days. I just told the gentleman that I needed to know that the scooter would last all day long at the parks before needing to be recharged. Thank you for your response it was very much appreciated. :thumbsup2
