Pre-cruise add ons-- merch / wine packages / beer mugs?

Considering adding a few items on but with a little research in threads on the Star Wars cooler, I saw that some items are actually less expensive onboard. Was wondering what you experts thought about:
  • wine packages. DH & I are likely to each have at least one glass of wine with dinner per night and tend to be happy enough with house wines (good move? bad move? do they actually save money or could you have a glass or two a night and pay less overall? Are they the same price onboard?)
  • Beer mug. DH will want one. It is $15 pre-cruise--is it the same price on board?
  • Celebration cakes/Birthday décor--we're going to have a birthday on board. Any experience with these?
  • Ship figurines--they look cool online but in person are they just like kids toys? Can those be purchased on the ship at the same price?

The only thing I can help you on is the ship figurine. It's definitely not a kids toy. I think it's a nice piece! They had plenty to buy on board at the shops. We even had ours signed by the captain.

Oooh fancy! What a great idea!!! I think I'm going to plan on that one.

I talked to my DH and he vetoed the cake. I think there is a cake of the day thing anyway.

The wine packages are basically a convenience if you plan to purchase multiple bottles of wine over the course of the cruise. The various choices are a three-bottle, four-bottle, seven-bottle packages. Longer cruises may have even larger packages available. Their are two tiers, one more basic choices and the second more premium. You select your bottles from whichever package you have purchased. There is typically a small savings over purchasing the same bottles al a carte, but your choices are also more restricted in that there are additional bottles of wine available from the al a carte wine list. Whether you purchase a package or purchase individual bottles al a carte or purchase individual wines by the glass is really a matter of taste. I've used all three approaches on different cruises and been generally happiest with purchasing al a carte bottles or wines by the glass to pair with particular meal choices. This has provided access to a broader selection than the wines on either the standard or premium packages. The one time I purchased the premium package in anticipation of having a decent French red to drink at Remy, I discovered that I could not use the wine package there. So I ended up ordering wines by the glass even there.

Because DW does not drink alcohol while cruising (and seldom drinks much even at home), I can usually stretch a single bottle of wine over two dinners. The servers (actually your assistant server handles most beverage service) will store an unfinished bottle and bring it to the dining room the following day. Alternately, you can take an unfinished bottle back to your stateroom to finish it there. The last two cruises, I have purchased a bottle at Palo and then finished it in the MDR the following evening.

For wines by the glass, the executive chef and sommelier include some food pairing recommendations on the dinner menus in the MDRs. Sometimes I try these to experience a new wine when I would not want to purchase a full bottle just for myself. Some of these pairings have been quite good.

The only pre-cruise item I have purchased so far is the cooler bag (Frozen) a few years ago. It's a nice size, it can hold a few drinks and some snacks. I debated getting the Star Wars version but not thrilled with the color.

We always by 2 6 packs of water, 6 pack of beer for DH and a ship for DD. I love collecting the ships hope to have them all one day. I can't sa the priced one e on board but I'm pretty sure we saw the ship in a store but you can't guarantee one by waiting. The other things the stores are only open when at sea so we found it hard to hit the stores at the right time had to wait til the sea day.
