She is seven and has Rett Syndrome. Rett is a neurological disease, and Lexi is in stage IV. She is in a wheel chair, eats from a feeding tube, has sever scoliosis, has bad seizures, and communicates with a picture board and sign language. Although this sounds bad, she's a very engaging, happy little girl, who loves to laugh.
She was admitted to Children's in St. Louis last night with pneumonia, and send to the PICU this morning after a long seizure that collapsed one of her lungs. They have her sedated. They are trying to decide if they will insert a tube to reinflate her lung, or see if her body can do it on it's own. The doctors are concerned that the medication it takes to sedate her further to insert the tube will slip her into a coma that she will not recover from. Her parents (my sister's husband and his ex-wife) are making the decision right now. If they don't put in the tube, she could die if her body doesn't do the work. Her little body is so ravaged from the seizures (part of Rett) and her immune system so bad, the doctors are not giving them much hope.
Please pray for little Lexi and her family.
I'll keep you all posted.
