Lots of you knew that I worked for a senior resort until recently.
One of the residents that I became very close to was a BEAUTIFUL lady by the name of Naomi King.
Mrs. King, though in her 70s, was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen. Tall, flawless pure white coiffed hair, always dressed impeccably. Always smiling and at peace. She swam everyday at the nearby community center and was in better physical shape than some people in their 30s!
Well, Mrs. King is the sister-in-law of Martin Luther King, the widow of his only brother, AD. She keeps her association with the family VERY low key, she tells no one, if you find out it's from someone else. Imagine, being a King in SW Atlanta is tantamount to being a Presley in Memphis!
She stays close to Coretta but stays OUT of the family trials, telling me that she "finds out about them in the news like everyone else" and sighs....
Every week, Mrs. King would present me with a "goody bag". She said she "hated waste" and since her daughter, a college professor, loved to cook, she always had too much food. I made very little money at the time and those goody bags were sometimes the only food Michael and I had! What a blessing it would be to see her quietly come by and sneak a bag under my desk. She NEVER wanted thanks or recognition. What a lady!
What I didn't know is that lady lost two children back to back, both died while running track, and found her loving husband dead in a pool a year later.
She was also with MLKs mother when she was shot to death in the church...
Earlier this month, her youngest child, Derek, was in a fire that the police said he started himself. It is a reported attempted suicide.
I cannot imagine the pain this gracious lady is going through, again. Losing two children and having one attempt suicide.
I cannot reach her because she went to be with him but will see her when she gets back.
In the meantime, this King "curse" continues to plague this family.
Prayers for Naomi, no one deserves this much pain.
