Prayers and PD for DS please! UPDATE 4/19, page 3.

Said a prayer and sending PD. Keep us posted please.

Thank you so much for all the prayers! The visit with the specialist went well. I'm really pleased with her. She explained things to Richard in terms he understands. However, she admitted him to the hospital. They're doing all kinds of blood tests in addition to the blood sugar tests. He will have to have insulin injections. :( Between 10 - 12 finger sticks a day, injections, and the blood they drew, he's one sore kid! The doctor is hoping to discharge him on Friday. She said he'll definitely be home for Easter.

My very best for Richard, Sandy, along with my prayers. Hoping he does well, and importantly, hope science comes up with a cure in the years ahead for this disease. {{Hugs}}

Prayers and pixie dust for Richard. Please let us know the results when you find out. {{{{Hugs}}}}

Poor guy.:( I hope he gets to come home on Friday. I'll say a prayer for Richard (and for you). {{hugs}}

I didn't realize my dd was 14 days older than Richard.:)

I hope your son's blood sugar stabilizes soon. I hope there is something innocent causing that high blood sugars. {{{HUGS}}} my friend. It's scary when our babies are ill.

Katholyn

Sending my prayer too....Hopefully it can be controlled through diet...hugs

Richard is most certainly in my prayers. 10 is way too young to have to deal with such a serious illness. :(

Please keep us posted on what you find out.

Pin Wizard--laurenk directed me to this thread--I'm so sorry to read this. My son was diagnosed over 5 years ago at age 4. Please PM me--I have e-mail friends that I made when my son was diagnosed and we still keep in constant contact. When you have a minute, check out this site:

http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/index_cwd.htm

and start reading. Also, go on amazon.com and order at book called "Sweet Kids" by the Brackenridges. It's the best book to put you in the frame of mind for returning to normal--I always say that diabetes isn't a sprint, it's a marathon.

Please PM me when you get a chance--threads like this bring back all the feelings I had when my son was diagnosed and I understand what you're going through right now.

Kathy

Richard came home yesterday. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! :) Thank you for all the prayers and pixie dust. I agree Dan, hopefully a cure will be found in his lifetime. And with all they're doing with DNA, it would be fantastic if they could fix the problem in there that causes this! That's pretty neat, Shannon...your daughter is just 14 days older. :teeth:

I'm just thrilled with Richard's doctor, the nurses, and the hospital he was in. They really worked quickly to get his diabetes under control. And meeting with a diabetes educator several times really updated me on how far they've come! There's so many changes since I was diagnosed. So far, he's doing great. He's adjusting quite well to having to take injections. He tests his blood, and I give the injections of insulin. That's fair. ;) Hopefully, we'll have the routine down pat quickly.

Thanks for the link Kathy! And a conference at Disney!!!!! I'll have to work on that.

Good to hear Richard is home, Sandy, and that he is doing well. And best of the holiday to you both.

And you can't beat a conference that you have an interest in held at WDW.

Glad to hear your son is doing well. My 13 year old niece has diabetes. She was diagnosed on Christmas Day in 2001, she almost died, it was over 600. She got severe stomach pains and they took her to the local ER, who lifeflighted her to the Children's Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh. When they looked back, they realized they overlooked alot of symptoms (tiredness, thirst, a couple bed wetting incidents), so it was probably going on for awhile. It's great that your son has a team of experts, which my niece has too. No one in either family has diabetes, except for an uncle of my SIL's who got it when he was older.

Her 9 year old sister was tested and she has the gene too that may cause it. So she's in a clinical trial using insulin pills to see if it will delay the onset. They willn't find out until next month if she has been getting the insulin pills or a placebo. Meanwhile, she gets tested regularly.

At least at age 10, your son is aware of what's going on and can assist in his care. My niece just whips out her testing kit & checks it and gives herself the shot (with assistance for the dose).

Glad to hear that Richard is doing so well and is at home. I hope that things continue to go well for him as well. And a conference at WDW? Sounds great!

Glad to hear that Richard is doing well and that he is back home!

Our local hospital offers a summer camp for children with diabetes, I think it's a great idea. If you are interested, check out Coral Springs Medical Center.

Here is some info~

* Camp KoralKids
Of special note is the medical center’s unique summer day camp for children with diabetes. It is the only camp of its kind in South Florida. The camp began with seven children in 1995 and has grown to hosting more than 60 children in 2001 (including several international campers). Children, and especially their parents, enjoy the security a medically supervised camp offers. Particularly as the supervision and education are interwoven into the daily activities that would be found in any "average" summer camp – swimming, arts & crafts, sports and games. Camp KoralKids was started through the generosity of the Hillsboro League of Women and continues to prosper through annual donations. Donated funds allow CSMC to offer scholarships to needy children – no child has ever been turned away due to financial needs. Camp KoralKids is proud to be a finalist in the 2001 South Florida Business Journal’s Excellence in Healthcare Awards.

Hope it's helpful!
:D

Thank you, Dan! Happy Easter to you also. :) That conference sounds great. Hmmm...I think I better look into moving around a couple summer courses. I wouldn't want to miss class time for a conference. I'll be playing catch up from the past few days as it is! And being that I started back at school last summer, maybe it's time for a break! ;) And this conference would be worthwhile.

Wow! It's a good thing they caught it when they did. I can honestly say that after the education I received at the hospital, this is the first time I really understand ketones! That's a frightening thought! It's scary that the docs I've had haven't been concerned about them even though at times my sugar runs high enough to have them. Note to self...find a new endocrinologist! I told Richard's doctor...it's too bad she's pediatrics or I'd go to her. ;) She said everyone tells her that. We saw her associate in the office who was so wonderful with Richard. She's only been here about 4 months and came from St. Joseph's in Paterson, NJ where she was head of the Pediatric Endocrinology division. She knows her stuff! :) She finally got tired of the snow. LOL!

Thanks, Elaine! It's great to have Richard back home. ;)

Rita -- The thought of a diabetic camp has crossed my mind. My oldest sister went to one when we were kids. I never went, but I think the more Richard learns and is exposed to other kids with it, the less apprehensive he'll be. He was in Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, and they were wonderful!!

How great that Richard is back home and dealing with his new routine so well.

I too, hope they find a cure for diabetes and I hope they find it soon.
