Boots, I'm sending prayers and good thoughts. Hematologists are also for blood problems not just cancer. Who knows, maybe he just has a viral infection.
As a smoker I had the exact same thing happen to me! What it turned out to be is something called "polycythemia" - normally a serious disease - BUT - smoker's get what is called "secondary polycythemia" and it is caused by smoking.. In that case it isn't treated the same way - usually just cutting back on the amount one smokes will clear it right up..
This happened to me several years ago and I believe I've given you the correct information.. You might try searching the web though just in case..
I'll say some prayers anyhow though because I know the two of you will probably continue to worry until you get the all clear from the doctor.. Just try not to worry TOO much - okay?
My best, Ellen, for Lucky. Hoping his tests go well and show nothing. Some day he may find it time to quit the smoking, until then, we can only hope and pray he does. {{Hugs}}.
