Powerball Jackpot

If you win do you have to give up your identity?
My aunt was actually telling me that there was a man who won the lottery a while back, and he lived in a bad part of town. He requested to remain anonymous and they wouldn't let him do that. He then requested if he can be anonymous until he moves his family out of the town they currently live in, and they agreed to that. That was a smart move on his part. Think of it this way: That's a whole lot of money that can be used for either good or for evil. I would love to win to pay off some student debt, but I also hope someone that deserves it wins.

What does that mean? Is there ANYONE who actually "deserves" to have a billion dollars? Really? LOL.

Who doesn't "deserve" to win? Someone who is already financially secure? Someone who cheats on a spouse? It's a weird concept to apply to a game of chance.

I bought my two tickets today. I probably don't "deserve" to win since I only bought two tickets. Lady behind me was buying a few hundred bucks worth. She had a WHOLE stack of 20's (pretty thick stack). She was at the ATM when I walked in, and then took all her crisp new 20's and laid them down. That I don't get. But maybe she "deserves" to win more than I do since she bought more.

It depends on the state. Each state has its own requirements. In California the only requirement is name and the name/location of the store where the ticket was purchased. It kind of occurred to me that a winner with a common name could set up who knows what kind of trouble for someone with that name living anywhere near the store. The lottery commission recommends a press conference to sort of get things out of the way.

Other states have different requirements, including consent to a photo or publicity. Even some of the states that allow winners to be anonymous require a photo of some sort. I've seen some photos where someone is wearing a mask or has that fake oversized check covering the face with a pseudonym used.

I mentioned maybe a similar name. This is one case:

http://www.wtsp.com/news/article/190866/58/Woman-Mistaken-For-Lottery-Winner

"My name is Tammy Henry Jordan," Jordan said. "Her name is Tammy Henry. She's 43. I'm 44. She lives in Jupiter. I live in Port St. Lucie."

Jordan even filled a police report, because the callers are threatening to come to her home and collect some of the cash.

"I've been receiving congratulations phone calls," Jordan said. "I've been receiving threatening phone calls. 'I know you won.' 'You don't have to lie.' 'We know where you live.'"

I'm sorry, what didn't you understand about my post and the word "deserve"? And why are you reading into my opinion so deeply when I'm simply just trying to put a new perspective on the whole dang thing? You completely turned my words around and made it sound worse than it is.

Shrug. I just don't get applying the word "deserve" to a game of chance. Everyone who participates "deserves" to win just as much as everyone else. You are entitled to your opinion. But, the wording struck me as odd. Sorry if that offended you.

2 Tampa guys have 290 people at $500.00 each minimum buy-in for 72,500 tickets. Helps their odds a bit.

I would take the annuity. The logical thing to do.

Didn't match one number so my streak continues. I'm done playing at this point. Hope someone won this one!

I WON THE JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in my dreams.... I had 4 of the numbers on 4 separate tickets... oh well! Probably going to be my first and last time playing. It was fun while it lasted!

Just saw it announced on twitter that someone in CA won - thank god the madness is over!! ;)

ETA: Winning ticket was sold in Chino Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles. I wouldn't doubt if there are more winners given that all the numbers drawn but one were below 31.

Also saw that Chino Hills is a very wealthy area and that CA doesn't tax lottery winnings.

There's an issue with the estate tax on annuities. There's a complex way to determine the total valuation, but the amount of tax is due right then regardless of whether there's enough cash to pay it. I understand that sometime the only way out is to cash it out with an annuity buyer.

http://finance.zacks.com/taxes-lottery-annuities-9048.html

States will make annual annuity payments to you and then to your heirs until the money runs out. If you die before receiving all your annuity payments, your estate and heirs could face a whopping death-tax bill on all the unpaid money remaining in the annuity. That tax would be due all at once in the year of your death. In effect, your estate and heirs would owe tax today on money that won’t be paid for years to come. But if your state lottery permits payment of the present value of the outstanding annuity balance as a lump sum to your estate, your heirs can obtain the money to pay the death taxes.

I had 10 plays and one had the Powerball number 10. How am I going to spend it all?

Maybe just buy myself a candy bar.

Seriously - I won't even know how much I won until tomorrow morning. Last time I got it the payout was $4. The amount is variable in California.

I got zippo. My news stated 5 tickets won. So happy for the winners! It's nice to hear that multiple people wake up rich.

Edited to add that 3 tickets are being reported instead of 5. I must have mixed up that 5 Michigan tickets won the million dollar prize. Sorry.

81 tickets matched 5 numbers for the $1million prize. I would have loved that. But, alas, just 1 number matched on my 4 tickets. DS, in NC, bought 5 tickets so maybe he matched 5 :-)

Yup we didnt even get $1 on our pool at work, forget my personal ones! LOL
