Power wheelchair not allow on hotel sidewalk?

Skip, that is not a policy of the resort. The CM was in error asking you to vacate. I'm sorry you experienced the situation. It's a shame you didn't catch her name and report her to Guest Relations. If I'd been there I would have argued for you as well.

My guess is she got overwhelmed by the crowd and made a knee-jerk decision which she got wrong. Then she got corrected by her manager on how to handle the crowd. That's probably why you never saw her come back to ask the manual wheelchair person to vacate.

I watch fireworks from the Poly sidewalk all the time. I usually go just in front of that main resort building near the pool where there's a speaker. I cannot take my powerchair on the sand and I wouldn't want to take it on the grass by that sunset pointe. The ground is too hilly and dangerous. Pavement is the safest place for me.

What the CM should have done is ask the pedestrians to move off the sidewalk and allow only the wheelies to stay parked. Unfortunately not all CMs get it right. That's when we have to politely speak up for ourselves.

I just wanted to agree with BroganMc that the CM was wrong. You should not have needed to move (and would have been completely within your right to stay). I've had a couple close calls getting stuck from parking my powerchair on the grass to watch an event (not at WDW). There's no way I would have moved onto the grass.

I don't know the specific area, but from all descriptions, there wasn't an issue where you were parked. It's too bad you didn't ask her at the time or get her name. Any time you get singled out like that (especially separate from your entire party), it's worth asking why and if there's another alternative. Hopefully she's since learned her mistake, but it's unfortunate that you lost out as a result.

Just wondering if you were positioned at a cross intersection of sidewalk? Was it a "T" sidewalk pathway? You can't block a walkway in the other direction if it was a sidewalk in multiple directions.

No intersections were nearby.

Can you say for 100 percent the cm saw the other wheelchair or not. With what skip and you and darth has said it dose not sound like she might have even seen the other wheelchair. As you said she came down told skip to move then turned around. As darth said the other wheelchair was not that close to skip to be consider together so how do you know she even seen the other wheelchair. If she seen it and didn't say anything then she wrong and needs to be addressed. But if we can't 100 percent say she saw the other wheelchair it unfair to keep complaining about her on that aspect.

She might have just been focused on skip for what ever reason we don't know and didn't see the other chair.

Ok. Even if she didn't see the other chair. Skip and our party were within Disneys guidelines.(to the best of my knowledge) and the rest if our party was taking up the same if not more room on the sidewalk than Skip was. Why were we not asked to move?

To tell you the truth I don't know I don't think the cm should of said anything to skip. I don't think skip was taking up that much or blocking the side walk. I don't see that side walk getting that much traffic other then watching the fire works to warrant her or any Disney cm in saying anything. I think skip should of asked why and not moved but being that skip a nice person that most likely didn't want to get into it with her decide in his own to leave. I would of went to the front desk ask to speak to a security manager and the gm and ask them why that cm asked skip to move. And have then explain the official policy's they have.

In hindsight maybe something should have been said. But I don't think Skip really wanted to make an issue out if it at the time. I know over the next couple of days afterwards it was starting to eat away at him though. And I think that is why we are here now. The more we have thought about it the more confused we have gotten.

I wondering if any of skips friend that are being defense and complaining now on here did they do anything that night to ask the cm why she told him to move and not the other wheelchair or make any effort to learn why she came down the path just to tell skip to move then leave.

Can anyone ever discuss an issue involving Disney without being told they're defensive and complaining? The purpose of these forums IS to discuss, and I appreciate the OP and his friends providing information about what they experienced.

I rarely post on the boards. Especially on this kind of topic for this reason. I chimed in here because I am a friend of Skip and I was there during this issue. As far as disney David's post it might have started a little harsh but I think his points and questions are valid and should have been asked that way everyone knows as many details of the issue as they can. I am actually kind of surprised at how well this conversation has gone. Based on some other threads I have seen over the years lol

I think it's time for each of you to write to wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com and report your version of the incident including date, time, and description.

Being defensive and complaining isn't necessarily negative. They're being defensive of their friend and complaining about how he was treated.

Yes they can they was being defensive of what they saw. I think skip has a valid complaint against the cm and should take the issue up with Disney. They was wrong and should make it right the cm should of explained her self more and should not have made skip move.

Let me correct something I said that to a poster which I did apologies as I thought it was rude. It was a mistake I said it I was in no way defending Disney or what the cm did. She was wrong period the end if she wanted to have skip move she should of explained her self better and not just choose skip to make move.

And I apologized to the poster for coming off rude in hind sight I should of used the words defensive. I took the comment he made to lane Judy the wrong way thinking he was upset people was questioning wheatear the cm could tell of they was tougher. Thanks for defending me I am trying not to go over the rails like I always do.

Yeah skip to kind hearted a person to say something maybe know that the dust has settled he can write or call disney.

Keep in mind it was dark not the best lot area....and Skip might not been able to see well.

I ask this not to defend Disney or the cm but to find out why this cm asked skip to move

Okay so it dark and not well lit which might make skip harder to see do you think the cm asked skip to move not for safety reasons for other guest rather then his own safety. Because maybe she thought where skip was how lit it was and direction of the guest will exit she asked skip to move to keep him safe. As the guest leave or if something happened they may run out of their or not pay attention to where their walk and run into skip possible hurting skip. Again this is not to defend the cm or make what the cm did right as she should of explained her self. But as skip said she was being nice when she asked and then disappeared I just trying to figure out why. Yes not everything needs an answer and we may never find out as skip my not want to post or have to post an update if he contacts Disney.

I do see your point. But one friend was to the right of Skip while the rest were to his left. So there was a human barrier around Skip so to speak. And saying not well lit might be a bit of an exaggeration on my part. While I was able to see fine in the area. I don't believe Skip could necessarily....what would be possibly fine for you and I. I don't think Skip can see as well as us. Skip please put me in my place if I am wrong. I don't mean anything by that. And only Skip can speak for how well he could see out there.

Even two people, positioned together, have different recollections.

Part of my invisible disability is having difficulty estimating the distance of an object.

If Matt and James say the manual wheelchair was 30 feet away, that is a more accurate estimate. Yes I thought it was 5 feet away, but that could be inaccurate in reality.
