Potty accident...anyone go thru this?

DD turned 4 last month. She has been potty trained completely for about 10 months now and has never ever had an accident. Well, last night, we went to pick up dinner, and she fell asleep in the car. When we got home, she was still half asleep so I moved her to the couch. I was getting her food when she complained her pants (and the whole couch cushion) were wet. I know she was still half asleep, but even during the middle of the night, she wakes me up if she has to go. She did drink a lot yesterday, but still. Is this normal for kids to have accidents this late after being potty trained? Now I'm worried too, cuz next month we're driving to Florida and she'll be in the car and asleep for some time. There is NO way she would ever consider letting me put pullups on, and I don't know if I'd want to at her age. Any advice?

My daughter is turning 4 in 2 weeks and she still sometimes has an accident just out of the blue. The other day she ran to the bathroom and didn't make it.

I think its completely normal.

She probably fell asleep with a really full bladder, woke up, but was still really sleepy and just never got up and opps!

I would think the car ride to Florida will be fine as long as you take a few breaks to go.

We keep a waterproof "lap pad" on dd's car seat just in case. Remember the baby lap pads? We never used ours until now but you can find them at any babies-r-us or carter's outlet. Probably Target, Wal-Mart, etc. At least that will protect her seat!

It's completely and totally normal.

A 4yo bladder is still tiny. She probably fell asleep with it full and was too tired to just get up and go. When little ones wake up in the middle of the night they are generally somewhat rested so they can get up; this time it was when she was exteremly tired and in deep sleep. I wouldn't worry about it.

As far as your upcoming trip, just make sure to limit drinks somewhat and stop often for breaks. Kids can use the stretch of their legs every few hours anyhow (when awake).

I wouldn't worry about it. It was probably a one time accident. That being said, if she continues to have problems over the next couple of days you may want to have her checked for a bladder infection.

When my daughter was about 4 and had been potty trained for some time, she kept having accidents. I thought she was just being stubborn (she is very strong willed). I thought perhaps she was regressing or something. Anyhow, two weeks later we went to the doctor. She had an ecoli infection in her bladder from wiping the wrong way when she went to the bathroom. Boy, did I feel like the bad mom of the year!

Anyhow, if it is not a one time incident, you may want to look at physical causes.

My ds is 5 1/2, and he still has the occassional accident. It usually happens when he is deeply engrossed in something else and doesn't realize he has to go, and by then can't make it to the bathroom in time, OR, first thing in the morning, he won't make it on time. I don't sweat over it...accidents happen!!

DD5 had an accident in her bed at WDW our first trip - I stripped the bed for the CM, left a note of apology, and a big tip!

DD is 6 and had an accident the other month as she was so soundly asleep
She was mortified but I managed to re-assure her and it hasn't happened since.
Her friend, who was 7 last month, wet the bed only the other night. Again, it's not a regular occurance but these things happen

Yes its normal. I reccommend that you bring a change of clothes (from the skin out) in a ziploc bag into the parks with you, just in case. We had an accident once, after thinking we were way past accidents and it cost $60 for shorts/shirt/underpants.

I have heard that some children may not even be truly nighttime potty trained until after Kindergarten. I wouldn't make a big fuss over it. My DD is 3 and has an accident for one reason or another about once a month. And she feels bad about it. I tell her it's no big deal and I don't mention it again. I think if it wasn't a normal thing, then they wouldn't have those "Goodnights" diapers for big kids.

I think the lap-pad idea is a good one.

I also carry around the ziploc bag too in my purse. I haven't had to use that "bag" in about 6 months, but it's peace of mind

I would carry a change of clothes anyway - there are loads of fab places for the kids to get really wet - and it's nice to know they can get wet and it doesn't matter as you can change them afterwards.

As for accidents, yes, we had the occassional one until she started school (aged almost 5) - ususally when she was 'busy' and forgot to go in time.

Totally normal...probably will happen again. Sometimes they are sleeping so soundly or their little bodies don't give them enough warning that they have an accident.

I agree with other Poster re: bring a change of clothes to the parks everyday "just in case", and don't make a big deal about it to your DD.

My 6 year old daughter did this over the summer, she would get so wrapped up in what she was doing it was like she was afraid to go to the bathroom...she hasnt done it in a while so hopefully she has gotten over that stage......

Our DD will turn 4 years old this coming Sunday. She has been potty trained since she was 28 mo old. She still has an occasional accident. Most of the time it is a little bit (quarter sized ) spot in her underwear. However, she has had a few full blown accidents.

The most recent one was a few weeks ago at a friend's hunting camp. She needed to go potty and someone was using the potty. She had waited so long that she just couldn't hold it not even for a few minutes.

I think they get so busy that they hold it and hold it until it becomes an emergency. At that point if the potty isn't free then we have an accident.

She's had maybe 3-4 full blown accidents since she's been potty trained. You can't help but feel bad for them. She seems so embarassed when she has had accidents.
