If I book a last minute trip what happens to the points if I need to cancel? What are the problems with making a ressie today for May 15th and having to cancel on May 5th?
Thanks,
Chris

Reservations cancelled between 1 and 30 days prior to arrival will go into a "Holding Account" which means they can then only be used to make a reservation within 60 days from when you call. Those points cannot be banked and will expire at the end of the current Use Year.

Reservations cancelled on the day of arrival will be considered completed and no points will be returned to your account.

Reguardless of when booked?

Yes, the only consideration is when a reservation is cancelled.

Thank you, this puts a little twist on booking a last minute trip for a friend if the need to cancel...hum.....
Thanks Doc & Deb

Chris...absolutely this puts a BIG twist on that! This is an issue people also can run into when renting points for reservations late in their UY.

I'd definitely explain the risk to your friend before booking unless you are prepared to absorb the possibility of having points expire or having to use them "under duress".

Granny is absolutely correct - if a member is renting or otherwise making a reservation within 30 days - they need to be certain their renter will live up to any financial agreement before committing those points at all.

There has been one case on the DIS Rent/Trade Board where a member made a reservation for a renter to travel within 30 days, the renter never paid and the member (who kept expecting the check to arrive any day) never cancelled the reservation - thus losing his points completely. IMO, payment in full should be received BEFORE even making a reservation within 30 days of arrival.

It would also be wisest to be certain a reservation will be used when booking within 30 days as the restriction placed on those points can be harsh if the reservation is then cancelled.

If renting, ask for non-refundable 50% upfront, 50% upon receiving ressie confirmation #. I only rented once, and used these boards to find out how best to protect my points, this was the advice I was given and used. My renter was A okay with it being that it was a 65 point rental, so I guess for him to have to put down a non refundable $325.00 wasn't an issue for him? Anyhow, it worked out great for both of us, and I got a note of thanks for a great vacation had by him and his family.

Good luck!

I would go even farther than that. If they are asking you to make ressies inside that 30 day mark, I would ask for all the money up front. Once you make that reservation for them there will be no recovering the points.

Yup, I would also do the 100% up front in that situation.
