Potential Newbie Needs Advice

Quick question from you masters of the DVC out there. How hard is it to get reservations outside of the major holidays? I know the main advantage to a home resort is that you can reserve earlier, but I'm looking at the resale market and AK and SS are the only ones carrying the dates past 2042. Will I have trouble using other resorts if I have one of these as my 'home?' Any thoughts would be helpful.

It depends entirely upon which resorts you want to be able to stay at, and which dates.

It is very difficult to book BCV abd BWV during Food & Wine Festival at EPCOT, even at 7 months out. Christmas, New Years, Easter, Thanksgiving and Spring Break can all be difficult at 7 months, no matter which resort.

The short answer to your question is yes, you will have trouble if your aim is to get into VWL, BCV or BWV. Those are the smallest DVC resorts and there are lots of members who want to stay there. When the 7 month window opens, you are competing with all the other DVC members. You may get lucky sometimes, but there will be many times of the year when you will not. This is especially true for the specialty units - Grand Villas everywhere, standard, Boardwalk views at the BWV, concierge & value categories at AKV, dedicated 2 bedrooms units at the BCV with 2 queens in the second bedroom and just about everything at the VWL between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

If you don't mind staying at your home resort if you can't change at 7 months (or can't plan more than 7 months in advance), then it isn't a problem. If you will be disappointed when you can't change, then reconsider your choice of home resort.
