Potential New DVC'er

I am new to this page. Just got back from Disney. Stayed for 1st time @ Poly. (Nov 8-13). Great resort but 300/ night. Watched Dis. TV @ night and saw the DVC. My kids are 8 & 5 and am planning annual Dis. trips. Is DVC a good deal! What should I know. DVC called me already about Saratoga Springs. Help me out ????????

Follow this board for a while (but don't take anything too seriously).

Is DVC a good deal? Possibly. We usually say here "if you go at least every other year and stay in a Deluxe." Its less of a good deal if you use your points outside the DVC system (to stay at the Poly for instance).

Also, many of us figure we aren't saving any money. Without DVC we'd go less often and stay in standard hotel rooms rather than two bedroom units where the kids each get their own bed. We wouldn't justify as many expensive dining experiences with "the room is paid for."

Buy a few more points than you think you need. Your vacation plans may change over the years and more points is more flexibility. For us, we own the minimum 150 - but we only go every other year.

The other thing you should be aware of is the resale market. It may or may not be for you, but it doesn't hurt to know about it before you sign with Disney. Check out the banner at the top of this page for our sponsor reseller. If the idea of a resale appeals to you (you can save a little money if you don't care about SSRs 50 years - we will be dead by then so it doesn't make any difference to us), there are other resellers and some stuff you should know.

Best thing we've ever done!!!

Not only will you save money, if you go every year, but you get a Home away from Home!! Did you get a kitchen, dinning room and patio in your room at the Poly? NO!!! Check it out!! The rooms at the Poly were 300 +. The "Condo" at the DVC would rent for far more than that! It will be well worth it!!

But then your asking Disney Addicts here!! Why else would we all be trying to add-on more points!!! We Love It!!!

Crisi gave some good advice. Read every thread that you can on this board. You will find the good, the bad and the funny regarding DVC. Ask questions about anyting you don't understand and don't be shy about it.

Find the resort you like the most and buy there (Disney or resale). That will be your home resort where you will have a reservation priority. So it really needs to be the one you want to stay at the most.

If you are planning annual trips and would want to stay in deluxe accomodations, than I think DVC is a good choice for you. On this board people are a little biased , but we love our DVC!!! I like the idea of having my room all paid for, deluxe accomodations, & a full kitchen and washer and dryer in the 1 and 2 bdrm units jsut to name a few things I love. I don't cook, but the kitchen is great for breakfasts and snacks and saves us money. I'm sure many others will post with lots of other advice. Consider it all, get the sales video from DVC and crunch the numbers for yourself. Good Luck!

crisi gave you good advice! Read everything here, but don't take it all seriously, because we often try to get a rise out of each other,--we tend to get defensive easily about our wonderful "home away from home", and it's good fun, at least till Doc sends the thread over to the Debate Board. You might want to try out a DVC resort before you buy, and if you do you can rent points over on the Rent/Trade Board. It's a nice way to try DVC out to see if it's for you. I love it, and it's the best thing I have ever done, too. I have a lot of points--700--and it still isn't enough because my one vacation per year has expanded to 3 vacations per year in a one or two bedroom villa, and I want to get a grande villa one of these times!

I would definitely keep reading the boards and if you haven't talked to a guide yet I would call just to get some info. You'll get a video and a packet which to me didn't tell me anything new but I liked having the pictures and the ssr booklet to look at! Good Luck! We recently purchased at SSR and I'm already looking for an addon!

I have a stock tip fer ya! Don't buy any!

Buy yer DVC points and take stock in the fact that you will have magical memories of vacationing with those kids for the next 38-50 years.

I am a little biased though. DH works at Intel and we lost big bucks in the stock market since 9/11. We figured we won't loose anything buying DVC With exception of annual park tickets

We bought our first contract of 200 points with OKW as our home resort in 1997. We bought our second contract(a resale) of 230 points with OKW as our home resort in 2001.

We have never regretted our decision...not for one minute.

DH is an obsessive-compulsive lunatic regarding researching things. He is also a full-time realtor and associate manager of his office. I will tell you that he looked at the DVC every which way, from every angle, from every possible financial situation,from every possible investment standpoint etc, and found that if you would go to WDW at least every other year and stay in a deluxe resort, then DVC makse financial sense.

Some of the pros of all the resorts: deluxe level accomodations; in 1BR and larger units-full kitchen,washer/dryer, which saves some packing; no need to have a big "chunk" of money to pay for the hotel-I always found that to be the hardest part of vacationing at WDW...with the DVC, you pay a smaller amount monthly, which for some reason is less painful than dropping $2000/$3000 all at once;locations on property in different areas, so if you have a "favorite" area, chances are there is a DVC nearby;ability to do as much or as little cooking in your unit as you want...does save some money on food;access to all WDW ameniities, such as bus transportation etc.

Each resort has their pros and cons...that's a whole other thread , but having stayed in all except VWL, I will say that there is not one that I would consider below par. Some have larger rooms but not as good of a location, some have smaller rooms but a great location, some have themeing which might not appeal to all, but in general, I have always personally found that any DVC resort is superior.
