POTC the Movies

Ok call us lame but no we havnt seen the movies yet! We just got them for Christmas. We were thinking of watching them this friday night.
QUESTION: Do you think they are ok for a 5yr old to see or would you say they are too scary?

Question: What type of dinner them would go with the movie?

I would probably say no. There are ghosts and monsters and cannibals along with adult humor. Of course it's your call but can you watch the movies ahead and then decide?

The movies will probably be too intense in spots but I don't think you'll have a real problem at home -- I'm assuming your tv screen is smaller than the theaters! Of course, nowadays that's not always accurate! Just snuggle on the couch and have a blanket or two handy to cover little eyes when needed.

As for dinner -- the only thing I can think of right now would be BBQ ribs and maybe some kind of rum cake for dessert?? Hopefully more creative minds than mine will follow and be more helpful!

We have told our DS7 absolutely NOT. It's way too adult for him with the ghost, monsters, ect. I don't want him to have those images in his head when he thinks about death.

Can't help you with the food - but how fun to have a theme!

In any event, I won't allow my seven year old to watch the movies. He's just a very sensitive little guy, aside from the fact that he is Mr. Questions, and we would have to explain what was going on. But then, we have an across the board rule about not watching certain ratings on movies until you reach a certain age.

You know your child best. Personally, if you question it, watch them by yourself first, and then watch with your five year old. That way, if there are parts you know they won't like, you can have the remote handy!

Kids know it is made up. My DS saw the first in the theater and was fine, This summer he and several friends 6 and 7 went to the theater to see the second one, when I asked the kids what they thought of it the said it was funny- honest that is the opinion they had of it. They love the monkey. We have both on dvd and he has now seen them many times - with a teen sister anything with Orlando in it is going to get multiple showings! I would watch them if he gets scared he is at home he can cover his eyes.

Dinner - Fish and chips, fruit punch (with rum, for adults!)

yuo know your child better. Mine love those movie. DD5 has been has been watching Dracula movie (no bad gorry ones) We took an 3 and 4 to VanHelsing they loved it.
POTC was great for our kids they sat through the whole thing, not scared at all. These kids sat through Harry Potters at 3yrs old.

Maybe I have strange kids. DD5 is always walking around acting like the bride of Dracula

Depends on your 5 yr old. My two when they were 5, no problem. My nephew when he was 5, no way.

Dinner: Pizza is always our choice for movie night......

MUCH too violent and frightening for a 5 year old! I think 13 is about right.

We allowed DD 5 to watch the first one, but we skipped several parts. I will not allow her to watch the second one. Frankly, Davey Jones freaked ME out and I'm an adult. And she wouldn't even ride POTC after going on once and seeing the Davey Jones part.

I think a lot depends on your child. But mine has an over-active imagination and does not need any help.

It depends on the child. My children know that it is pretend like a cartoon so they are not phased by it at all.

Thnks every one for the input I dont think our lil 5yr old will be seeing POTC this time around. Some times you just dont know what the movie will be like, so thank you again for all the info on it. It sounds like it might give him night mares!
As for our them dinner still on the fence on that one but the rum cake sounds like it might be a winner! Yum!

um...what are they rated?? I had thought PG-13? Maybe I am wrong. but anyways, if they are PG-13 then no way. The ratings are there for a reason and even if you think your child would enjoy it I stil think that it is not appropriate for a little child.
My 7 year old has begged, begged, begged to see them but I told him no.

We first saw them in the theaters before allowing our son (just turned 5) to watch them. They are somewhat violent and scary, but we know our son and he handled it fine. He hasnt had any nightmares about it either. Ive seen worse stuff on some of the cartoons he used to watch! He loves Capt Jack and even had a POTC themed birthday last week.

You know your child, so it would be best to preview the movies first. The 2nd one is "worse". Once your son watches one, he will probably want to watch the rest. My son is already waiting for the 3rd one to come out in May!

You should probably watch them first before you decide.

Our kids-6,5,and 3, have seen the first one. They love all pirates and aren't frightened by skeletons. (Skeletons ARE pirates to my 3 year old) Only my 6 year old has lasted through the entire movie. The others would come and go.

Now the second one...We haven't let them watch it yet.. I don't think the characters would scare me kids, but would probably scare a lot of kids. We have all the action figures and they know that the pirates with Davy Jones and just from the sea and that is why they look the way they do. Number 2 is a little more violent then number 1. We have several books from both movies and read them all the time

We started out just showing the first part with Capt. Jack and then the part with Will and Jack. Then we decided it would be ok to see the whole thing.

As far as food...We love pizza when we have movie night.

I don't know about dinner, but can you still get those white chocolate M&M's they brought out when they movie was in the theater? They were themed with POTC....that and some popcorn would be good....

My 3 year-old grandson watches them all the time. He comes home from school and asks to watch Pirates. We have the soundtracks from both movies and he is able to pick some of the music and say where it belongs in the movie. I have never forced him to watch anything. If he got scared I would have turned the movie off. My other "younger kids" are 8,10,12 and they have no problems. they would laugh if I told them that some people thought that they shouldn't see the movies until they were 13. KNOW THY CHILD!!! I love the fish and chips idea!

My boys love these movies and they just turned 6 and 8. They saw the first one on DVD this past summer and we bought the second one for them when it came out on DVD. My son Mark wears his Jack Sparrow costume nonstop and we have downloaded some of the music and he re-enacts the sword fights. My 19 month old daughter even asks for the pirates to be put on and will pretend to sword fight her brothers. One of my twins doesn't love the movies, but he is not scared by them. Like others have said, it depends on your kids. I would compare them to the Harry Potter movies in terms of their intensity.

For me, the Pirates movies are a lot like Indiana Jones or Star Wars (the original films not those horrid new ones). If your kids could sit through those without getting scared, then they can definitely watch Pirates.

As for what to eat, fish and chips is a great idea. But I would add apple slices (first and second movie) or fruit shish kabobs (second movie) to the menu. Once you see the movies, you'll understand why....

My ds9 doesn't want to see them, he thinks he will be scared. He watched the first Harry Potter at 8, and refuses to watch any more of them because it gave him nightmares. It really is about knowing your child. He's fine with cartoon stuff, but real people are too much for him. He's one of the ones they make the PG-13 rating for, so we heed it.
