POTC - do you think this is really going to happen?!!

Hi hildasmuriel,

I must admit I hate log flume type rides because they petrify me as do boats.

If the park map had mentioned POTC as being a ride with a log flume I wouldn't have dodged it like the plague but I'm glad I did go on it because I think it got me over my fear of them...my screaming probably helped too! :rotfl2:

However now it's got me wanting higher drops...I must need psychiatric treatment lol

Here's the changes they made to the California version:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1zYF44yE3k4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1zYF44yE3k4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

If we get anything like that I'll be very impressed. The Jack Sparrow animatronics are incredible, I honestly thought it was an actor when I first watched it!

That is so good, if Johnny Depp was not stood next to Jack Sparrow I would of had trouble believing it was not him!

:scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! No big drops on POTC, please.
The drops that are on the ride already are about as much as I can bear. Anything higher and I wouldn't be able to ride and it's my faaaaaaaaaaaaaavourite.pirate: pirate: pirate:

Don't worry, they aren't going to change the drops or add any new ones. They are just adding a few more animatronics of Jack Sparrow and, hopefully, Barbossa, maybe the Davy Jones waterfall effect and new music.

Are toddlers allowed on potc? My dd will be 19 months when we go in june, just wondered if the drops would be too much for her??
thanks

There is no height restriction on POTC, so you could take you DD on if you wanted. My DD was 28 months when we took her on, but I'm sure your DD will be okay if you hug her during the drops. If she is at all scared of the queue area then I suggest not taking her on the ride, as things will probably only get worse!! But usually children of that age take these things in their stride - mine have just got more scared as they've got older!!

The changes will be great. We were going to take my 20month old niece on it at Easter but seeing as she had just eaten an ice cream we didn't want to chance it;)

From reviewing this info it is implied that they will do this work in the near term without closing POTC. This is very confusing.

When they added these new elements to POTC DLR California in 2006 they took the ride down for almost four months. I rode POTC DLR California once last August and there were some nice new effects. I just do not see how they can possibly do anything similar over a few short weeks, especially without closing the ride down. Any speculation out there?

When we went in may last year POTC was closed. We loved this ride when we went back in November, so I really hope there not going to close it again.
Do love what they plan to do though.

I might be wrong, but I believe that both the DL and WDW versions also had rehabs done at the same time. DLP POTC had a big rehab last year, so maybe they can just add the new elements out of hours. :confused3

Sounds great.......what a good excuse to start planning another DLRP trip!pirate:

Yes, POTC at both DLR and WDW was down for 3-4 months. When I visited WDW last year it was in the middle of the POTC refurb so I missed the ride there. But everyone says the POTC ride is much better in California.

In 2006 the POTC at DLR had Jack Sparrow AA figures added in several places along the 14 minute ride. A Davy Jones effect was added. The music was changed in one of the scenes to incorporate the movie theme music. And Captain Barbossa was added. In addition, the sound system was improved.

The was serious talk at DLR this year about taking POTC down again before the POTC 3 movie premiere to be held at DLR on May 19. AA figures of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann were going to be added. But this did not happen and the POTC did not go down for refurb this year. Instead the island called Tom Sawyer's Island is being converted into "Pirate's Lair", or more precisely "Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island".

I just hope they do not decide to take the POTC down at DLP while I am there the first week of June!

Thanks for the tips! Very much appreciated.:hippie:

It should be completed by the end of May, so hopefully you'll get to ride it :wizard: Look forward to hearing what you think of the DLP version - it's supposedly on a par with the DL one :goodvibes

I am sure it will be great at DLP!

Wow! Not one person after 30+ posts is acting like these changes will bring about the end of civilization as we know it. This was not the case when these changes were first announced for the US versions. I'm sure HydroGuy knows what I'm referring to. The DL version is top notch, and the new animatronics are, as pointed out earlier, quite extraordinary.

A bientot.

That's the magic of the DLP board :goodvibes ;)

I doubt any regular poster on the DLP board would have got too uptight about it anyway. ;) But don't forget that we have the advantage of having read the reviews of the new look and seen the results on YouTube (or in person, if they're lucky), and know that they haven't spoilt a classic ride - but enhanced it :thumbsup2

Well, even DLR and WDW are different situations as you know too. DLR has so many diehard local AP holders that feel as if DLR belongs to them personally. While DLR fans constantly call for change, whenever they actually get change they scream hysterically. On the positive side, these people are passionate about DLR and it makes for a fun community.

I am a hard core traditionalist, and remember going on POTC back soon after it opened in 1967 (can't remember when I rode it first, but I was very young). POTC is my favorite ride at DLR and kind of defines DLR for me. So I was concerned that they might change the ride in an undesirable way. As I said, I only had a chance to ride the refurbed version once, and the changes will take some type for me to get used to. But overall I thought they did a great job and I know they made the ride relevant for the next generation such as my four sons who are POTC movie fanatics.

As a family we will be out at DLR at the end if June for three days so I should be able to get at least 2-3 more rides on POTC to get more accustomed to the changes.

I am really looking forward to experiencing the DLP version of POTC.
