Post your Western Cruise Excursion Reports here!!!

Key West:
Walked to the Hemigway Museum and Lighthouse Museum. Glad we did, but wouldn't feel the need to do again. The walk was lengthy, but I think older kids/teens wouldn't have problem; I wouldn't do it if anyone has mobility issues.

Grandy Cayman:
Nautilus Semi-Seb and Snorkeling Excursion (booked through DCL): Short and sweet, I thought it was a good value (I believe $35/pp for 2 hours). The shuttle ride to the sub was very short. The tour guide was charming and knowledgable. We saw lots of fish and coral and a few shipwrecks. Near the end, the captain dropped anchor, donned scuba gear, and went outside to "feed the fish" so we could watch from our portholes. Then they led us upstairs to don snorkeling gear and we snorkeled around the boat for about 45 minutes. Before we snorkeled, we saw hoardes of tiny jellyfish in the water, and when some of us voiced our concern, the tour guide said, "Some days they're feisty, some days they're calm. If they start stinging, get out of the water." And they were stinging, but I guess they were little enough most folks weren't bothered by it. After I got stung twice, I went back. Those who stayed the whole time ended up with little red welts on their arms and legs. Nobody seemed to care but me! It was my first time snorkeling. Then a short jaunt back to the shore, and at that point, we could either catch a shuttle back to the ship, but I believe they also said they would shuttle you to the beach if you wanted. On Grand Cayman day, our tour started at 7:30 AM, ended before 10 AM, and we were back on board and enjoying the pool the rest of the day before most folks had even gotten off! I give the excursion 9/10. I wouldn't *mind* doing it again, but I would probably try something different first. It seemed to be a great option for families. Except for the 5 year old girl who started swimming away from the boat and her mother "lost" her briefly. You know your kids, just make sure to have the talk about safety and whatnot prior to the excursion!

Cozumel:
Booked a reservation at Nachi Cocom through Island Marketing, Ltd. (deposit is required by credit card, the balance is due upon arrival in cash only). This is a private beach area that limits the number of guests to 100 per day, and you will have your own dedicated lounge chairs in the shade. There is also a pool and hot tub with lots of space to lounge around. Included in the $55/pp fee is a 3 course lunch (simply delicious... you must try the guacamole!) and unlimited beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. They have other services you can add. We added an hour long couple's massage in an open air cabana overlooking the ocean. At only $70/pp plus tip, it was SO worth it. (Though don't make the same mistake I did... if you can see out, others can see in! Everyone kept their swimsuits on, though my masseuse practically ripped mine down before I had a chance to think about the logistics of it. :scared1: Just be sure to think about what swimsuit to wear to make it easier, as they will want full access to your entire back, and there is no private place to change and get comfy before it starts.) The massage itself was wonderful, though vigorous. My DH also booked 30 minutes on a jetski, which he thought was fun; I thought it was expensive for $30, but I didn't go and don't like the things, so YMMV. You can also buy a photo of your arrival in Mexican hats, and they had other water entertainment for rent, but I didn't pay a lot of attention to that. What I would do differently in the future is come dressed for the beach (it was gross having to change in their bathroom) and try to split a taxi with other folks heading to the same place (we talked about it on the Dis before going, but forgot to set it up). Taxi fare to get there for 2 people was $16, and $16 to return. They accepted US dollars for everything. Pretty much, this was our day: Arrive, pay the balance, got escorted to our loungers, got shown all the extras we can buy (it was a soft sale, as we had already pre-booked our fun), got our first drink order in, relax, relax, relax, have a massage, eat a wonderful lunch, relax, relax, relax, got in the hot tub near the end of the day. Most people were gone by 2 PM. The place didn't close till 5, our ship didn't leave till 6, so even when we left at 4:15 or 4:30, we had the place mostly to ourselves for a few hours!! Oh, and there will either be taxis out front, or they will call one for you. WE WOULD DO THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Nachi Cocum sounds wonderful!!! And reassuring to know that it is easy to get a taxi back.....I am paranoid about missing the ship!!! ha! ha! How long was the taxi ride? What were the choices for lunch?
Would love to see some photos!

We did not go through Disney for Grand Cayman. We booked on line through Native Way and went to string ray city, starfish beach and snorkling. It is definitely worth the money and the staff was very nice.

We are doing this tour in two weeks -- thanks for posting! Any rec's for lunch on GC? I know it's expensive but after the tour I think we'll be ready to eat, esp. my girls.

We did Grand Cayman and Cozumel last year while on a Carnival cruise. We did each one "on our own" and loved it.

Grand Cayman: walked out of the port to the public bus depot (not a "station" the way that we think of it) located by the library. Went to Sea Grape beach on Seven Mile Beach. It was awesome. Paid a few dollars for an umbrella and chair, and had the place to ourselves for a considerable amount of time. Around mid-day, more people started arriving and we were getting hungry for lunch. Shopped in town and went back to the ship. The beach had a small, bar, restaurant, and was close to a hotel so we could have gone to their side of the beach and had watercraft rentals, etc. Very cool experience, although not part of a tour or anything.

Cozumel: We also did Nachi Cocum. There were 8 of us (five adults, three kids) and I would absolutely, positively recommend it again. Lunch was great, all-inclusive with drinks. They made the kids non-alcoholic versions of the fruity drinks mom and dad were drinking and they were in heaven. To this day, the 7 year old still asks for "Bahama Mamas" and people look at us like we're crazy. There was a pool with swim up bar, covered pavilion for eating, and each group had their own reserved chair and palapas. Great day, until it started raining like crazy. But Nachi Cocum was on top of it, calling taxi vans for everyone to take back to the ship. Seems like the ride was about 15 minutes, just south of San Francisco beach on the map.

What is a great family beach to go to in Grand Cayman? We are going in three weeks and have nothing planned for this port.

I don't see Nachi Cocum listed as one of the Port Adventures on DCL site. Is it maybe called something else? I'm thinking of doing the Cozumel Highlights and Myan Ruins tour in Cozumel, anyone ever do this one?

Nachi is not a DCL excursion. You can go to their website and book it directly (just do a google search). You then grab a cab (they all know where Nachi is).

Key West- We always visit with family or stay on the boat

Cozumel
Chankanaab State Park- on our own through Dolphin Discovery This was the kids' favorite by FAR! Booked online and left the info for our cruiseline blank. LOVE this place and would go back in a heartbeat, even without the Dolphin Swim. We have 4 kids (7,10,12 & 14- they were 4-11 at the time we went)so price, entertainment value and a variety are always important. Food is delicious and cheap, lots to do beside swim with dolphins- pools, snorkeling, beach, hiking trails with pretend ruins, LOTS of wildlife to see on the hike. Employees are friendly and not pushy at all. Service was great, not too crowded and the dolphin swim was incredible. The trainer was very informative and patient with the kids (even the one with a million questions...) and got them all to participate, even when they were a bit hesitant. They provided taxi payment to and from the park for us too!

Fury Catamaran through DCL. I would highly recommend this one too. A fun boat ride (30mins) straight from the port to their private beach. GREAT, fun & friendly crew, lots of drinks for kids & adults. Beach wasn't crowded, food was good (burgers ARE GIGANTIC and the macaroni salad was the best my 12 year old ever had, lol) and the water toys (trampoline, climbing nets, kayaks, etc) were a ton of fun for all of us. (kids were 5-12 when we went).
The FURY staff made my husband and I seriously consider retiring to Cozumel when we're older. They were just that awesome!

Grand Cayman
We did Cpt Marvin's Sting Ray City and starfish snorkel (or something like that)on our own (paired up with a family of 4 from our DIS meet and got a private boat for less then the DCL excursion!). It was fun- crew was great and very accomodating, snorkeling was fun and the crew did a great job keeping an eye on the kids so us parents could have fun too. They let the kids drive the boat, pointed out landmarks and famous people's houses as we went in and out of the channel and provided transportation via private van to/from the port- you just look for the guy with the Capt Marvin's sign and he takes you to his van and drives you there...

Boatswain's Beach/Turtle Farm on our own- Funny thing about this one is that I booked it on my own through their website and paid $20 less per person but we went on the DCL tour (we met at their booth at the port, they gave us a different color wristband then the DCL people but put us on the same bus to/from). The BEST part was we had free range of the whole park and activities- the DCL people were limited as to where they were allowed to go in the park?
Anyway- this was a fun "do it once" kinda thing. We held baby turtles, swam with turtles, learned a ton about turtles, saw lots of birds & other animals in their mini-zoo & hiked a little trail that was fun. We enjoyed hanging out on their beach (although not an ocean beach- it was on their manmade lagoon where the turtles are). The food & drinks were pricey, but I think everything in GC is. When we were done hanging out we just hopped on the bus back to the port and went. It was very easy transportation with no worries about missing the boat (Since the DCL people were still there when we left!)

Cozumel - Playa Mia cooking excursion for the adults (or maybe just mom). We did it this week and had a lot of fun and learned a little bit too. $79.00 each - included the 2 hour lesson, we ate the food we prepared; open bar and access to all of the resorts' toys (boats, trampoline, small pool). I did not pay enough attention to say if it was suitable for children although I did see quite a few playing on the trampoline and in the playground.

Going on the maiden voyage of the Fantasy and have booked the xel-ha excursion. This will be our fifth Western but we have usually done Cozumel on our own. We have never gone to the mainland and I am a little concerned about the boat ride over and if I will get sea sick. What have people experienced and has anyone gone to xel-ha and what did they think.

Thanks

I was hoping someone would speak to this as well. We are booked for this in March and I hope it is good. Can anyone offer their thoughts on the Cozumel Highlights and Myan Ruins tour in Cozumel?

I just booked Fury Catarmaran for this May in Cozumel. The only time left was 8:45am. Has anyone done this one in the morning? If you arrive with the morning group, do you have to leave to go back to the pier at 12:45 or do you have an option to stay until later in the day? Or will the beach be reserved only for people in the afternoon group?
Thanks!

If possible for the boat ride over, sit outside. This is what we were told to do. As we sat there during the ride, more and more "green" people came upstairs and laid on the benches. We were fine.

popcorn:: I would love to see everyone's input too.

:santa: Also, has anyone ever been at Christmas? Debating between Christmas cruise (we have been at WDW at Christmas, now trying to decide btwn WDW or cruise for Christmas this year), or WDW at Christmas and cruise at Spring Break. The kids think it would be cool to be onboard at Christmas, but I think I would prefer a cruise at Spring Break -- we do water port adventures -- how cold is it at Christmas?! :confused3

We did the 11-night Southern Caribbean Christmas cruise on the Magic in 2010. It was fabulous! We loved all of the little touches on the boat (you can see most of those in the weeks prior to Christmas for cheaper) and loved our relaxing Christmas. I took one suitcase of little gifts, so we got up, opened a couple, went up to see Santa (enjoying hot cocoa and cookies while waiting) and do facepainting, opened two more gifts, went to decorate our gingerbread house, finished opening, went to sit by the pool eating the roasted chestnuts and watching a movie on the big screen. I would do it every year if we could! :santa:

However, we were on the unique, southern itinerary, which meant that we had warmer weather than the regular itineraries. We were able to swim every day. At Castaway Cay, it was chilly right next to the ship, but on the beach, in the sun, it was beautiful. My children went in the water a little but mostly played on the sand. I don't know about the weather for the closer ports. :)
