With taxes and fees we are paying $450.00 for 13 days (May8th to the 21st) for an SUV from Hertz through Priceline. It was $50.00 cheaper than my best reservation which was with Alamo and I hate Alamo. $27.00 a day for an SUV isn't bad. I was very pleased with doing business with Priceline. Its worth the gamble to low ball the price.

I had a higher weekly rate but got lucky early one morning when prices dropped and modified my reservation to this rate. Saved about $60. 15 minutes after I switched the rates were back up to their current prices.

I'm checking all the time to see if the rates drop again. I can't use codes since I'm using an Amex Reward but I'd like to see if I can get a larger car at about the same rate.

How do you go about using the Amex Rewards? My sister is planing on renting a car when we go in Aug. and she told me she has all these Amex Rewards and to find out how she can use them. Is this only good with Dollar? TIA

I'm still wondering I can I combine a rentalcars.com contract code with the Entertainment book coupon code (they list a different contract code)

I think if you have an American Express card with Membership rewards, you can earn one point (or more) per dollar spent. To get a $200 gift certificate, you would need to accumulate 20,000 points. We almost used our points to get $75 off but they made us use their American Express contract code and it turned out more expensive than using a combination of other codes.

Hi msr709 -

Your sister has enough points to get a freebie rental or a good chunk of $ off in the very least.

Amex gives you points for dollars you spend, they show up each month on the statement. Your sister can check her rewards online or they also send out a book or they are happy to answer questions over the phone. There are a few car rental companies that you can get coupons from (starting at $50 I believe). You call Amex, tell them what you want, they send you a coupon and you redeem it at the rental desk. I think the $200 coupons cost 10,000 points. The coupons expire 6 months after they are issued. We use dollar because I usually get the lowest rates there. As I said before, you can't combine the Amex Rewards with any other discount BUT if you sign up for their "fastlane" membership they send you a free upgrade to use and we were able to combine that with eth rewards when we went last year.
