We have a diagnosis. My son had a sore throat in the middle of May. A mild one. No fever. The thought of Strep crossed my mind briefly, but I didn't want to be one of those moms. You know the ones.

He was on the couch for maybe a part of 2 days. Then, it all went away...or so we thought.

Turns out that stubborn little germ went and hit his kidneys. Thank God that his is a mild case so far. No renal damage yet. His pediatrician put him on an anti-biotic and we will retest his urine on Monday. If it doesn't improve ot looks worse, then we are in for further studies--an Ultrasound and/or X-ray. Tonight he is great and taking it easy. What a kid! Thank God he told me of his problem right away. Pretty smart for 8.

Thanks for your prayers and thoughts :D

Hi Tinks! My ds8 had this 3 years ago--even while he was being treated for strep! He just had to continue on the antibiotics, drink water, water, water, rest up and go in for a few repeat UA's--we never had to go the route of ultrasound/xrays. Everything worked out just fine and I hope things go as well for your ds!:) I remember when the Dr. first gave me the diagnosis--I had her write it down because I had no idea how to pronounce it! Now it's something I'll never forget!

If it makes you feel any better, treating strep throat doesn't prevent the kidney problems, so it may not have made a difference. (It's conventional wisdom that it helps, but if you really read the gold standards of the literature, there's a large reduction in heart disease that comes after strept throat, but not a provable effect in the prevention of kidney disease)

Hope he feels better soon!

Wow! I had never heard of this. I tend to be one of "those moms", I guess. But as you said your son had no fever to go with the initial sore throat, I probably wouldn't have raced to the doctor either. You know, you listen to all the stuff about not giving your kids antibiotics unless it's completely warranted and then you hear things like this. Well, I hope your son feels better and makes a quick recovery and won't need many more tests.
I've already said a prayer for him (and for you!) BTW, smart kid for listening to his body and telling his mom::yes::

A good time for him (and you) to take it easy and watch some Harry Potter videos--what do you think?;)

I couldn't even say it once, wow. I hope he's better soon. :)
