Post-Race Funk

Ok, vets, I ran the Country Music 1/2 Marathon a month and 3 days ago. I did my Army PT test last weekend and just between us (don't tell anyone, I don't want this to get out on the internet or anything :lmao: ), I mailed it in. I passed but could have done better. Part of my problem is that my work schedule has been hectic but that's just an excuse and I know it. The next race that I'm even thinking about is the ToT 13k and then the Marathon (I signed up this week!!!). The problem is, those events are so far out that they don't scare me enough or fire me up enough to get out and do some mileage. There are really no local, or even close, 5 or 10k's. How do I get out of this funk? I still love running but I'm just not motivated. HELP!!!!!!!

You don't have even some short races near you? What about a bike ride? or a triathlon (hehe!):goodvibes

I wish I knew what to tell you, but it actually is sort of normal to feel like that for even a month or more after a key event.
And I can empathize...I've been in a total funk since doing the triathlon at WDW 2 weeks ago. I'm still getting my training done (having a training group is huge), but not very excited about stuff...I think partly the heat, partly some disappointment about the race, and definitely partly due to the fact that I have to get out of the relationship I'm in very soon. :(

So...where are you? I bet we can find an event to keep you occupied between now and October. The sheer fact that you are aware that you need that "carrot" to keep motivated is a step in the right direction. If nothing else, you and me and Bubba73 can make a game of the miles contest or something, ok?

hugs!!

So...where are you?

I'm in the vast wasteland of Montgomery, AL. There are a few things in the Birmingham area but I have National Guard Annual Training when the xterra is going on followed by a "procedure" that will keep me down for about a week (IF I don't get stupid). I'm still hoping for a Peachtree Road Race # for the 4th of July. I have a few friends in ATL looking for me. Thanks for the support:goodvibes

I just happen to be working on my acount on www.active.com and looked up events for Birminham, AL.

June 21, Stampede 5K run in Fultondale, AL
June 28, Race to the Courthouse 5K Birmingham, AL
July 4, 27th Annual Peavine Falls Run 8.2mile course Pelham, AL
Sept 13, Sobriety 5K Run

Hope this helps and I am sure there are other websites that you could find some local races on. I try to find local ones through the local running club websites, I like the ones that are for some type of cause or charity event.

Yep, I search on active.com and signmeup.com

Also, look under your local running clubs or running stores....they may have some club races that wouldn't necessarily get a lot of publicity/advertising.

Good luck and hang in there!!

Big Brothers Big Sisters is having a 4-mile race at Regions Park in Hoover on Saturday, June 14 from 6-9 PM. Details can be found at http://www.bbbsbhm.org/BBBS+Night+Run.aspx?Page=5c82af40-7264-48d7-91b1-5c768d745ac4

I'm considering this for my first race EVER and it would be great to have another DISer there!

I'm still doing Couch to 5K and have my first 20-minute running interval planned for Tuesday. I won't sign up for the race until I make it through those 20 minutes of running, which is why I just say I'm "considering" the race.

Ed,

I used to live in Dothan, Alabama. A great source for all kinds of events in the area is the dothan runners website....dothanrunners.com.

I noticed that you are planning on running the Disney marathon in January. A great training "race/run" is on November 22nd in Sunny Hills, Florida (hills in Florida??::yes:: ) It is an 18 miler called "Draggin Tail." I did not run it in 2007, but the previous 3 years it was very small (less than 100 runners). They also have a website, draggintailrun.com. And yes, my tail was draggin' by the end of that run  The race is off of Hwy 77, about 15 miles south of Chipley.

Good Luck!

Ed -

You are going to run the Peachtree in July so get yourself in gear and start training! Its going to be hot and humid so no excuses for not training in the heat and humidity.

Also the US 10k Classic is on Labor day here in Atlanta and I expect to meet you there. Its 6.1 miles & uphill the whole way so you need to be very trained or it will kick your butt. I have always been afraid of it but I am going for it this year.

I know that after training for a half, 10k doesn't seem very exciting. But I promise you in the summer heat, it feels more like a half than a 10k.
