Post processed photos drop from 5 MB's to 600 kb in PSE

Hi!

I am having problems with my photos losing too much data after going through PSE 11 .

I took a JPG photo which was 5 MB, opened it in PSE 11.
I made a plain white background layer in order to make a small white border around the photos.

Then I used the Text tool to add a signature in the border.

I saved it at the maximum output , but the finished photos was only around 600 kb, too small to print well.

When I save the same file as a Tiff or PNG, it is around 3-4 MB's, but I can't find any online photo places that will print these files.

Has anyone else run into this ?

Thanks!

What is PSE 11??

What are the dimensions of the photo? 600 KB for a Jpeg, when the TIFF is only 6 MB doesn't sound too far off. A full res TIFF for me is usually almost 50MB.

Use of too many acronyms around these boards is one minor annoyance I have with the Dis.

I don't have PSE and use PS CS5 but afaik the layer functions are similar. If I make a new layer it has the same dimensions as the original so to make a border I have to make the first layer smaller. Is this how you are doing it?

I tested the process and my file got increasingly larger, from 4.5 MB JPG upwards when saving as a JPG. What are the pixel dimensions of the original and of the saved version?

Not sure what is going on with the file but it does not sound like the file size is out of the ordinary for a jpeg.

Just for future reference you should look at the pixel dimensions when considering if a file is high enough resolution to print. I've got some grayscale 8x10 jpegs that are 2400 x 3000 pixels that are less than 600K. These are the files I sent to the lab for a job I did this fall and they printed wonderfully. For whatever that's worth.

SkaGoat.. PSE is Photo shop Elements. A pretty common acronym on all photo boards.

My guess is Photoshop Elements 11?

I agree, some posts I give up reading because of the acronyms! It is worst than the military!

I assumed it was Photoshop Elements, but when posting a board for advice it's probably better to use the products name, I wouldn't post "I'm having problems getting my CE7D to focus properly when I'm using my BRC RS-4 with my BG on." you wouldn't know what I was talking about.

Thanks photo- chick and others . I haven't really figured out what I was doing wrong, but I started all over again with the original files, and watched out for the pixel dimensions, and somehow they are exporting in the right size now.
Thanks for taking the time to help me!

When you are checking the pixels make sure the DPI is the same as your original.
