Post Nominal Letters

So. It appears that I can set up my own awarding body who can confer letters after people's name. My idea was to award letters to anyone who has three or more qualifying qualifications for hypnotherapy (typically three diplomas) or more in the subject. Technically I can do that off the top of my head. But for them to be recognised, I need to pass it by a major awarding body. Fired off some eMails and will see what they say. Prepared for the worst. Ah well. It's a nice idea.

Mind you… The "International Guild" awards post-nominal letters (such as miGHyp - member of the International Guild of Hypnotherapists) to people who sign up to use their services as a directory. I don’t see why they can and I can’t! They don’t even require any leaning any more! You ARE, however, waving a banknote at them every month. You are BUYING post-nominal letters, and in theory the register entering - but no-one looks at that and it's soooo hard to find. Useless.

Sounds like a scam.
The ones where you pay for an accolade certainly are.

This one I'm proposing is aimed at professionals who need to amalgamate their awards portfolio. No scam. No money. No signing up to anything. Nada. You just get the letters and, if you want, I'll eMail you a digital certificate. You can pay to have it printed if you wish on your own accord. Of course, I'd never really advertise it, too much like hard work. But I know a few people who would love to have it. I don't qualify yet so it's not for my own benefit. Punters who see the letters and Google them will see they're if they're legit.

Of course, as I've said, if they're not recognised the letters are worth nothing. Not that that there's anything to stop me from doing this!

If anyone can randomly hand out letters then it really means they are of no value.
Some aren't. As I stated, there are some that you pay for. They require no learning, no accomplishment, nothing. Except a credit card. At least with the one I'm envisioning, they reflect a certain level of knowledge.

Then you're going to have to explain this...

Honestly, based on your threads over the last year or so, I think you're putting WAY too much emphasis on letters after a name. Just my opinion of course.

I dunno about hypnotherapy, but here are my unique qualifications;
1) I can smell ants
2) I can hear ultrasonic sounds (like dog whistles or those things they use to repel pests)
3) I can juggle

I appreciate your consideration should you be successful in passing the awarding body. LMK...

ROTFL!

It is true, I put a lot in to awards and accolades. In my fields of study, you can never have enough, not just to reinforce your standing as a therapist but also to reinforce your learning.

The letters I'm proposing would act as a conglomeration or other letters. So far, my colleagues are all for it :) That's how you can tell they're worth something.

Could you expand on the idea that your colleagues' opinions prove the worth of the letters? How many colleagues' opinions are we talking? For what purpose would someone find them worth something?

I'm guessing, twelve who would be eligible? I'm not, yet, but I hope to be. People want them. I dare say, some may have even been encouraged to take another major course.

It's a way of summarising your qualifications if you have too many to look good on a card. Nothing more. It's not like I'm making money out of it or anything. It's a community thing.

But I'm not trying to win your approval. Got enough of that from therapists I know. Not sure why I posted this on the DIS TBH. A psychological need for approval? lol!

Honestly it is kind of a bit inside baseball for outsiders to even begin to grasp what this accomplishes or the significance.

Just to wrap up, not flog a dead horse etc., I guess it's a cost to benefit ratio. Cost? None. Benefit? Some. I'm still not convinced in it as an idea, but I have nothing to lose and people have nothing but to gain :)

I'm still not following. Can you give an example?

So if John Smith has XYZ, ABC, GHI, LMN after his name because he's gotten four certifications, you're suggesting he can come to you and you'd come up with a shortened version so his card can now read "John Smith, XABGL" and someone is supposed to know that XABGL means he's has the four certifications list above?

Seems like there would be too many permutations to make it worth it.

TBH, it wasn't my idea, it was a colleague's. People just kept on coming back and saying what a good idea it was and I volunteered.
