Possibly relocating to Detroit area

There is a possibility in the future that DH might take a position in Detroit. I like to look into things ahead of time, so I've been trying to look up info on the internet about Detroit's suburbs. I still feel that I don't know a lot yet.


For those that are familiar with the area, what can you tell me? I guess I'm looking for any kind of impressions you can give me (positive or negative). Compare or contrast whatever comes to mind.

How far out are you willing to live? We are about one hour north of Detroit, but there are a lot of nice towns between here and there. Detroit is in Wayne County, and the county directly to the north is Oakland county. A lot of people find that Oakland County is a very expensive place to live. Hop up to the next county north, Lapeer County, and home prices and taxes drop dramatically. I'm not sure exactly what areas you were looking at or what your criteria is, but if you're interested in this area, I'd be happy to give you more info.

Would your DH be working in Detroit? That would make a diff where you would want to live. We're in a Detroit Suburb so I could help steer you a little. Do you have kids too would be another good question to ask you. Then you'd have to be concerned about school districts. I also live in a Detroit Suburb and have lived here almost my entire life...

I have lived in Wayne and Monroe County. Wayne County is where Detroit is, and I find Wayne County to be a good area and not as costly as Oakland County.

There are suburbs that are very expensive and some, just as nice, that are not. I was also a teacher in the area and have some school info if you need it.

To answer a couple of questions, I have two children (DS 6 and DD 4) so schools are important. Also, DH would be working in Detroit. Thanks again!

We live in Novi, about 1/2 hour west from downtown (when there's no traffic). Pretty much everyone I know in Novi lives here because the schools are highly rated. House prices are higher than some areas but I've never heard of anyone losing money when they sold their house here. Our kids are DD 4 and DS 6 too so you can PM me if you have questions about our schools or preschools. Many of our neighbors work downtown so the drive is definitely doable. We are 1/2 hour from Ann Arbor, 1 hour from East Lansing and 2 hours from Grand Rapids. We've lived in Novi for about 10 years and love it. We both grew up in suburbs just south of Detroit if you need info. on those. Good luck!
