Okay I am really confused and I am hoping you guys on the DIS can help me. We are looking into to relocating from CA to OH. And I am trying to look up cities to find one that will fit us best but I am confused about something. What is the difference between a city, a village and a township?? In California we have counties, and cities. That’s pretty much it. We have different sections of town but it is still known as the city name. Sorry to sound lame, but I am so confused. Thanks for any help, I need it!

Well, I am similar in that I relocated from CA to MI (right near the ohio border). I still haven't figured out some of that stuff, but I do know (at least here in MI) that a township doesn't really mean that much -- it's just sort of a vague geographical area. Like ... smaller than a county, possibly the same size as a city or bigger. I *think* everybody is technically in a township, but you only really refer to it when you live somewhere in between cities. Like I live betwen city A and city B, so this entire "in between" suburban area is called "X township", and you'd use that if you wanted to give really generic directions, like "the feed store is just outside city A in X township". So it's not extremely meaningful. I think usually a township wouldn't have like a downtown or a main street or anything -- it's just an area.

I think a village and city are similar but a village is smaller.

Hope I'm not giving totally whacked out info ;) since I'm a transplant myself

I live in Illinois, in Cook County. I also live in ______ Township and within the township I live in The Village of ___________________. The Village is my town/city although the word village seems odd because we have a population of about 22,000. The next village over has nearly 70,000 people. Our village has its own school districts, police and fire service, library, etc. The township is a geographic area encompassing a collection of communities. Our township provides services that in many ways seem to overlap the county services. However, I think having an intermediate form of government is a good idea in a county of 5.3 million people.

A township is more along the lines of what neighborhood you live in. I got really confused when I moved to KY and they didn't have any. "But what NEIGHBORHOOD and township are we in?" I'd ask my dumb ex. "We don't have any, it's just Louisville" He'd say. :sad2:

Back in Ohio, I lived in Hamilton County, outside the city limits of Cincinnati. My actual geographical location was Miami Township or North Bend. Now that I've started I have no idea how to explain it to an outsider.

For the record Cincy is a great place to live and lots to do. I can't say how it compares to CA though. Good luck!
