Having felt I am long overdue for a raise I went on a job interview and have now been asked back for a second interview. Now I am getting anxious because if I do get the job it will most likely mess up my plans for a trip next June. Of course I have approached my boss for a raise and if I do get offered the job I will ask again. Hopefully I will just get a nice raise and my planning can continue (along with more money for the trip). I am almost hoping I don't get offered the job. Can you believe that? I guess I should think of it as I will have that much more money in 2005 and can afford a deluxe resort instead of a moderate or value. Still, I am going to be so disappoined and so is my DS, 13

I'd make it part of the negotiations. If you tell most employers you have a trip all planned they are usually VERY accomodating.

You should have mentioned the vacation during the interview.
If I have pending plans I always mention them and the worst I have ever been told is, "you can take it, we understand people make plans well in advance, we just will not pay you for the time off."

Well, I thought of that but I will already be needing 3 days off in April for a long standing trip that the family takes every year plus a day in May. I feel like I would be asking for so much time off before I even accept a job. I am going to play it by ear. If they say a week vacation after 6 months, which most employers have, that will be okay. I may then say, well, I have a trip to WDW already booked (not really but they don't know that) and would there be any objection to taking 2-3 additional days vacation? All they can do is say no, right?

All my problems would be solved if my present employer would just give me a raise.

I am in a position at work where I manage 4 positions. One of them has a high turn over rate (not a great job, not very good pay). Anyhow, I encounter this quite a bit. I have never had a problem with it. As long as it's mentioned either at the interview or within the first week of work. Some people don't like bringing it up in the interview. Reason being, if you sit there saying well, I need this, this and this off, it doesn't always look good. Kind of ease into but very close to the beginning. Or possibly when they hire you. My husband is currently looking for a new job. We have a villa paid for, airline tickets bought and a trip coming up in October. We will be going, he'll have to just ask up front, and I'm sure they'll be understanding.

Thanks Kilee for the response. If they offer me the job I will just bring it up then before I accept it. All they can do is say no. I just wish all this was over with. Too much stress for me.

Someone I know had the same problem. She just asked if she could begin her employment a few weeks late. She was "jobless" while on her vacation, but she started her new job as soon as she came back. I think this would work really well for you.
Good Luck.

I was in the same position 3 years ago.
Starting a new job and already had 2 things planned that I needed time off for.
My DD was getting married (needed a week off) and we already had our WDW vacation planned and paid for.
I don't feel it is a good thing to bring it up til after they make the offer of employment. That is when I brought it up.
It was kinda........."Thank you for offering the position to me. I am very interested and willing to accept. But feel obligated to tell you up front that I have ......bla bla bla.....already planned. Is this going to be an issue for you?" Then explain that the plans were made way in advance, bla bla bla......

As someone already posted most employers are willing to work with you. And most employers have vacation time for their employees, so chances are you will be entitled to it anyway.

Good luck which-ever job you end up with.:D

I wouldn't worry about something that will happen next May or June. Just play it by ear. I certainly wouldn't bring a vacation up that is that far off in the future.

I went for my second interview. They want me and almost offered me the job but had one other person they were interviewing. The guy did say I was the favorite and we started talking benefits, salary, etc. We got to talking about vacation and I just put it this way. You are interested in me because I am detail oriented. Part of being detail oriented is I am also an obsessive planner and in that regard have already planned two vacations for next year, 3 days in April and another in late June (the WDW trip). He said that would not be a problem. I feel so much better now. I am so glad I took Kilee's advice. Thanks again, Kilee. I owe you a post card from WDW at the very least.

Congrats!!!

I hope I have your luck. I have a coiple of interviews next week.
