Possible to upgrade a ticket to an AP without activating it?

We have one day tickets that we are hoping to upgrade to SoCal Select APs in February, but a friend heard a rumor that they're getting rid of them soon. Anyone have info on this? Or is there a way to upgrade them without activating them? Can the Disney Store do this?

According to the Disneyland website, upgrading a ticket to an AP can only be done in person at the main ticket booths, GR inside the parks or at one of the three DLR hotels.

She was buying AP vouchers at the Disney Store yesterday and the lady behind the counter mentioned something about thinking they were going to discontinue them "next year." But my friend didn't get the impression that the lady necessarily knew what she was talking about.

No, the warning you get is waking up in the morning to the ticket booth menu price boards having been changed overnight.

I just did this while staying at the resort. Even the grand Californian couldn't do it- I had to go the ticket booths. And, once upgraded, the AP was immediately considered active. I had wanted to take care of it the night before to save time, but couldn't as the first day of use was going to be a blackout day and I wanted to take advantage of the policy in place that grants you entry on the first day of purchase even if your pass is blocked out.

The ticketing people at the ticket booths at DLR. Let them know that instead of an activated AP, you want to purchase an AP voucher. So that it isn't activated and can be given away (or used by you) at a later date.

But the OP already has tickets in hand. Can you do that? Whenever you have tickets that you want to apply towards an AP, they treat it as an upgrade, not a new purchase.

We'll just hold onto the tickets until we're ready to use them and hope they don't discontinue the SoCal Select AP's in the meantime. I guess if worse comes to worse we'll enjoy a day at Disney!

We just did this on Friday. I purchased a one day/one park ticket for my DD, she used ticket, at noon we went to ticket booth and upgraded her to SO CAL AP, one day ticket was used as the $95 down payment. She also got 13 months for price of 12.

The OP wants to use the value of an unused ticket towards an AP voucher which they will activate at a later date.

Yeah, not even close to what the OP wants to do. What you did is standard protocol for "upgrading" a park ticket to an AP.

Applying the value of an unused ticket toward the purchase or renewal of an AP used to be allowed (we've done both). But it's been a long time since we've done it and I'm not sure if it's allowed any more. Some posters have reported being able to do it for the purchase of a new AP, but not for a renewal. Contacting Guest Services would probably be the easiest way to find out the answer to this.
