Still, two years is a long time considering they can be working on multiple aspects concurrently. The production planning can be gong on simultaneously with construction.
My big fear is that this will be a hard ticket event.

I don't see any scenario where this would be a hard ticket event happening. That would be like making Fantasmic, IllumiNations and Wishes all hard ticket events.

I don't think it will be a hard ticket event, but if you want the best viewing areas you'll want to purchase the dining that comes along with the viewing, or be in the special desert seating area.
And 2 years is a long time considering much of the technology has already been developed for the show at CA.
Some how they need to build mounds around the lake.
You're assuming that technology development was a part of the two year+ process for World of Color. It was not. The technology was created and tested well before the show was designed around the technology.
I work in live/themed entertainment design and 2 years for this project is the minimum amount of time it will take to complete the show construction/installation. Most of the technology and design work is most-likely already completed.
There is a lot of construction work that will need to happen in an area that is difficult to access while at the same time running normal park operations. This will take time... 2 years worth of it.
I think the demand will be very high for this show and I'm sure that it is being designed to accommodate the demand. However, we also must remember that the crowds that were attending 3 night time spectaculars will now be spread across 4 night time spectaculars. I also expect 2 showings of Rivers of Light per night will be needed... At least during peak seasons.
