We're setting sail on August 28th and it looks like that there may be a hurricane hitting the Caribbean around that time. Since this is our first cruise, is there anything we should do? What does the capt do for the route in rough seas during a TS or hurricane?

Depending on the severity of the weather where the ship may (should) be cruising, the captain may alter course, as well as port stops to avoid it.

There's really nothing you can do. Weather happens. Did you get trip insurance? That could cover things like delayed/cancelled flights.

yeah we got the trip ins. and we're heading down to FL in 2 days then doing the cruise on the 28th.

Agree, not much you can do. Maybe plan to take a little more meds with you for seasickness. The Captain will cruise around the storm if possible, adjusting or skipping port stops if necessary. If you booked excursions through DCL and they get canceled, you won't be charged; if you booked independently, you'll have to check the cancellation policy of the vendor(s).

Enjoy your cruise!

They will more en able to take ye though a blow!

Them fellas will be a tracking the blow, trimen sail and changing course and speed, ready to change ports o' call to keep yet all safe and dry!

Iffen you be a softy of a sailor check this here link below, to track the blow!

That's the right attitude!

We've been on several cruises, DCL and others, that encountered storms. On each occasion the captain did his best to avoid the heavy weather and give everyone aboard the smoothest, and safest, cruise possible. And, his best was pretty good.

I'm not bothered by storms at sea (I've been in some big ones when in the Navy), but DW can be sensitive to the motion at times. However, she has done fine most of the time, and actually sleeps better when the ship is rocking a little .

As for the whisky, during one storm the ship was virtually empty by 10pm, and I found myself the sole occupant of one bar, except for the bartenders. I had several whiskies and swapped sea stories with the bartenders about storms we'd been in.

This is my first summer as a cruise enthusiast. I bet y'all get a lot of threads like this?

Often enough.

As someone who doesn't have any motion issues, it's hard for me to appreciate the apprehension others have about storms and sea-states that cause the ship's movement to be noticed. But, in my experience, cruise ships are extremely stable and smooth platforms when compared to Navy ships, and even commercial aircraft.

However, since everyone has their own motion tolerance level, especially to a ship that can move in 3 different directions at once on occasion, it's impossible to suggest how they will deal with a cruise experience. DD is especially sensitive to motion, even in a car, but has done 2 cruises without a problem. DW, who is fine in a car or on an airplane, is more sensitive to the movement of a ship, though she has never actually gotten sick.

One suggestion, if you do encounter a storm, don't try to walk a straight line. Go with the motion of the ship so that you sort of zig-zag along the passageway. Easier on the equilibrium.

I grew up in Florida (2004 central FL hurricane season represent!) and still live on the east coast, so my reaction to something that far out is basically two-stage:

1) Yep, that looks like a tropical disturbance.

2) Wake me up when it's less than 48 hours away from me.

Sounds like a great idea!
In all seriousness, as everyone has pointed out - there really isn't much you can do yourself and it sounds like you've got your bases covered with regards to trip insurance and shore excursions.

My wife and I's honeymoon was on the infamous Hurricane Sandy cruise on the Fantasy and we didn't let it dampen our spirits! :)

Yikes! Am sailing on the same day and had no idea!! Was just browsing the forum for last minute ideas. UGH!
