It seems as if they are finally going to completely enclose the "Festival of the Lion King" theater facility. Plans are being drawn up now for a possible construction time near Easter. We haven't been told yet if they are going to keep the show up and running with construction at night or if the show will close completely during that time. I'll keep you posted.

Not a question of "if", but a question of "why?"

I don't see anything to be gained by making any changes to the theater as it stands, unless there are plans to host other shows in that venue. (Did I just answer my own question?)

I am also wondering "Why?"!
I like the idea of the "outdoor" theatre being AK. Some say it gets hot....but I have been there in 95 degree heat and it wasn't bad.
I think to enclose it would make it so much more difficult to enter and exit. And it would definitely loose the atmosphere of being in the jungle!!!
Bad idea ......IMHO.

They are enclosing the theater so they can offer the guests a complete show every time. During the summer months the show changes due to the heat...during the winter due to the cold (the one day of cold, anyway) and shows get cancelled in the rain if the stunt performers or dancers feel it is unsafe (only when it rains hard enough to blow in the sides or the center of the roof). The show is going to keep running during this time since they will only be working on it at night. I think this will be a great idea since every show will look like an evening show (how the show is supposed to look) which now only happens if the park stays open later and the last show is at 5:45 or if there is a convention show.

As a Cast Member there, it is an EXCELLENT idea for the reasons above as well as the intense heat we feel when performing the show. Also, it's not easy to breathe doing that show when it is cold.

Yes, I've been in AK when the show was cancelled due to cold (Jan. 2001) and the show I did finally get to see because it warmed up a little was modified-no trapeze things of any kind. Thought that was what the show was like until last summer, when I finally got to see the "real" show.

Slightly off the topic...
We just saw the show again today and it seemed like the dancing has been changed a bit, although the main show was still the same.
The topic...
I see no sense in this...
1- they should be building a new 'stadium' over in Africa where this show belongs.
2-Then the show can still go on (they can't possibly think they can close down an important/vital attraction like this at the attraction sparce Animal Kingdom without a equal replacement and still call it a park???)
3-Camp Minnie Mickey would be deserted and Pocahantas would have to close, since most of it's show crowd comes from those exiting the Lion King Show.
4-and for the same reasons...at the same time they should build a new Pocahantas show out at Conservation Station, which needs another reason to visit (and this time build the seating out of metal or plastic BECAUSE IT IS A HORRIBLE EXAMPLE TO DO A SHOW ABOUT CUTTING DOWN TREES THEN MAKE ALL THE SEATS OUT OF ABOUT 40 (4 FOOT THICK) TREE TRUNKS <the sad irony of which I just realized today as we watched the show>)
THEN move both shows and forge ahead with the new Beastly Kingdom area that the park is sorely missing.

Not that I think the park is cohesive (get rid of Dinoland...then we'll talk), but would a stadium fit in Africa? I'd have to offer a resounding no!

I don't know how it would be done, but it sounds as though the construction will be done at night and the show will run during the day.

That doesn't fit with your first thing! They need SOMETHING there!!!!

Are the benches really tree trunks, or are they like the ones at the Tree of Life? Just curious....I've never seen the Pochontas show.

THEN move both shows and forge ahead with the new Beastly Kingdom area that the park is sorely missing.

Yah....that would take money. Money that Disney seemingly isn't ready to spend.

As a sidenote, the cold does BAD things to airways and so, as someone pointed out, it affects the singer, dancers, and acrobats. Climate control is definitely necessary for the performers. I should imagine that it ALSO benefits the set pieces and costumes. That Florida sun is strong and probably fades those things like nobody's business.

I also don't see how enclosing the theatre would cause traffic flow problems. When I was there, there was only one exit and it created a huge bottleneck.

They could easily integrate an African themed building to house the show in Africa. I'd build it behind the Tusker House (unseen) loading to the left of the Safari entrance, and exiting through the bar area. The music and show would fit perfectly in Africa.
-----------------------
They would never, and have never run a show in an active construction area. That is obsurd, unless we are talking about a few wall panels flopped up against the sides of the building, but if we are talking building walls to code laying footers and such, I would think not.
They do have and occationally use curtains drawn across the exit/entrance, which do make the show much better.
--------------------------
I don't know what my "your first thing" means, but the fact is if the Lion King was to have to close for the construction, then Camp Mickey Minnie would become a dust town. The Pocahantas show is fed and filled by the exiting Lion King show which alway ends 10-20 minutes before the Pocahantas shows.
---------------------------
Real tree trunks, I sat there Sunday on an edge that had broken off (splintered), felt the wood texture on the seats, felt the cool moistness that wood has in the morning. If they are not real wood, then they are simply an amazing reproduction of wood. And even if they weren't real wood, the ironic conflict is still there.
----------------------------
Disney spends plenty of money, it's just a matter of where they will spend it next.
Personally I think their priorities should include:
Freshening up Epcot, finding a new way to encourage new Countries to build pavilions (e.g.: multi-culture pavilions with 4 or 5 countries paying for a shared pavilion, sharing an major attraction, stage (offering non-stop alternating entertainment) surrounded by a shaded (or indoor) eating tables.
Replacing the lost live show (Hunchback) at MGM.
Adding the missing part of the park, Beastly Kingdom.
The park was suppose to have animals that were (Dinosaurs), are, and never were (Dragons, Unicorns).

Well, I'll repeat....

You may not want it, JeffH, but the Cast wants and needs it. Do you not care at all about us?

Personally, I like the show where it is. It doesn't really need to be in the Africa section of the park. It would be nice, but it is definitely not needed there.

Oh JeffH:

I do agree with you about the Pocahontas seats. I've always found that ironically amusing. I chuckle about it everytime I've been in that theater.

I think there's more to integrating a building into that area than themeing. It's supposed to be an African village, and I think a stadium type of edifice would be completely out of place. Just my opinion!

I mean it wouldn't make sense to move the show to Africa, because once again, Camp Minnie-Mickey would be empty!

Just my own curiosity made me ask.

They're not doing things up to snuff. Someone brought out figures. DisneySea in Tokyo was constructed with a price tag of $3 billion. California Adventure, the whole park was built for some $650 million. They're simply not investing enough money into the states' parks. I'd rather they save the money and build more and better later, and simply enclose the theatre for now.

Once again, all is just my opinion!

I never said I didn't want it or didn't care about CMs.
Quite the contrary, I just think they should do it right, a new bigger enclosed air conditioned show area...and if they did it my way, the CMs in the show wouldn't have to go on 'vacation', during the upgrade.
If they 'hid' it behind the Tusker House it really wouldn't spoil the theming of the area.
And I don't think DisneySea in Tokyo cost much 'Disney' money.
