I am considering exchanging with RCI next Sept/October and would like some advice.

I have 37 points for use next year and would need to borrow the rest for the 160 required for a 1 bed exchange with RCI.

is it possible to do this and what is the procedure?

I am hoping to organise a trip to New england and there seem to be some great exchanges with RCI.

Any comments would be gratefully received

Many thanks

I'm curious to see what you find out. We've never exchanged for RCI but have definitely thought about it. 165 points for a 1 bdrm sounds like a great deal to me for a week, plus the $95 one time fee. But so many choices of where to go! New England sounds great. Hopefully someone on here can give you more info. I'm pretty sure you can do it on the DVC website. I've seen the links.

We did an RCI exchange a couple of years ago. We wanted to go to Kauai. When thinking about doing an exchange, keep in mind that DVC has a minimum point requirement you have to exchange. In other words, you can't do 25 or 30 points. I'm blanking at the moment what the minimum is. Second thing is that RCI has a large membership of their own. Your exchange points will be good for 2 years. If you are trying to stay at one of their more popular places, you might have to book a year out or better. I booked our Kauai trip one year out and picked the days of our vacation based on the only week they had open with accommodations large enough for my family. I would hope that New England would be a little easier than Hawaii to get a space. I've thought about RCI for something like a weekend Yosemite trip. However, not all their resorts will let you stay for 2-3 nights; some require a one week reservation. The RCI resorts available to us are only the top resorts. DVC has standards that have to be met for us even in RCI. The exchange and reservation are done by phone. No access through the DVC website for reservations. At least I could locate exactly what we wanted before calling which made the process quick and easy.

Hope this helps!

I did the RCI exchange last year- it was fast and easy. I had to borrow points as we had 3 rooms for 2 nights at an RCI resort and 2 rooms for 3 nights at the Disney Paris resort. There is now a link on the DVC member home page to book RCI online which is awesome as it is so much easier to see what's available! Good luck!

Anyone know the min point requirement I am planning on using 59 points to trade into rci soon . Will that be enough

for a 7 night trade, a 1BR in RCI starts at 160 pts. you can look into nightly rentals but they can be more difficult to come by.

That will be tough, primarily because there just aren't many timeshares anywhere near Yosemite. You could get an exchange in San Francisco, Wine Country, or Tahoe to tie in with a Yosemite trip, but probably not near the park itself. Besides...at Yosemite, you REALLY want to stay inside the park, preferably in the valley at Yosemite Lodge or The Ahwahnee.
The RCI resorts available to us are only the top resorts. DVC has standards that have to be met for us even in RCI.
And I know that's true, because my "guide" told me so! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Actually, in any timeshare system you should never count on getting comparable accommodations with an exchange -- and DVC is no exception. In any exchange, most of the time (but not always), you will be trading down.

That doesn't mean you can't get good trades -- you can. Just do your own independent research on the resorts you book. And realize that often a two-star resort close to your destination is better than a 5-star 50 miles up the road.

There really isn't much for Yosemite and only 2 of the 4 are RCI points. The other 2 are full weeks only. Of those 4, only 1 has less than a 2 BR (1BR no studios). For DVC, there are only 2 resorts and they are not RCI points resorts and they both have only 2 BR units. So likely 270 points or a little less if it's MID season. There is currently limited availability

You have to pay with points in the UY of the exchange normally which sounds like it'll work for you. They'd borrow the points only if you matched the exchange request. The best procedure is to pay the exchange fee (refundable if you don't match or cancel first) and place an ongoing request.

  1. Studio - 106 Low/123 Mid/134 High
  2. 1 BR - 124 Low/144 Mid/160 High
  3. 2 BR - 207 Low/252 Mid/270 High
  4. 3 BR - 276 Low/317 Mid/349 High
You pay for what you ask for but you can't ask for a unit smaller than the min for a resort you request. For example, if you want a 1 BR but the resort only has 2 BR then you pay the higher points costs. If you get less than a week you'll likely have a housekeeping fee ($$) in addition to the exchange fee. Normally this is between $40 & $100 depending on the resort and it may not be listed on the exchange info.

The RCI resorts available to us are only the top resorts. DVC has standards that have to be met for us even in RCI.
To a degree but it's not to protect us, only them. They don't list many top resorts for various reasons (Orlando, limited exchange availability and some who knows).

Don't plan on anything "soon" with RCI unless you are just REALLY flexible. They have some great last-minute stuff, but I've never looked last-minute with DVC. It will be hit or miss, at best. With Wyndham/RCI, we often get major points discounts last minute, but I don't think DVC has access to those deals.

As Dean outlined above, you don't have enough points for a full week anywhere. That leaves two options: book a nightly stay resort for whatever 59 points will get you, or do an ongoing search with instructions to borrow the points needed to completed the reservation.

With regard to the points, don't get too carried away with the one-bedroom and studio options. Many timeshare resorts have only two-bedroom and higher -- so not too many one-bedrooms available. There are even fewer studios available.

But that doesn't mean you can't get a good trade. You just have to be as flexible as you can be.
