Poss cancel trip, banking/borrowing ???

We have a trip planned for Feb 2004, using 294 pts. Use year is Feb. This is what we are using:

Feb 2004 pts: 150
Feb 2005 pts: 144

There is now a possibility that we may have to postpone this trip. What are my options? I know that the pts that I borrowed can not be returned to Feb 2005. I think that the latest that we would make our decision to cancel is Dec. Would that be too late? We are normally a 2 income family, but dh has just recently lost his job and basically if he doesn't have one by I guess around Dec, we need to postpone this trip. We are hoping for the best, but the way this economy is, we are not thinking too optimistically at the future.

You have until January 31, 2005 to use the borrowed 2005 points. You only need to make a decision by 30 days before so they don't go into holding, which would restrict the points to use for reservations 60 days in advance. So if you decide in December you will be ok. If you can't go in 2004, you would need to bank the 2004 points by July 31, 2004.

The reservation has to be cancelled 31 days before your date of check-in. Pay attention to weekends as I believe you have to cancel on the Friday for a "31st day" that falls on Saturday or Sunday. This allows you to have full use of your 2004 points which you can then use or bank into 2005. As mentioned, the 2005 points will have to be used before 1/31/05. However, they can be used for anything -- DVC or any of the other options.

If you cancel less than 31 days out, the points can only be used for reservations made 60 days in advance and the 2004 points won't be able to be banked.

Just adding to all everyone's mentioned. If you do decide to cancel but you are able to book a stay on points later in 2004, request that MS use the borrowed 2005 points first, since they expire 1/31/2005. You can always bank some or all of your 2004 points into the 2005 use year.

Sorry to hear about your DH's job. Hope all turns out well and you don't have to cancel.

I'm sure this would be a very last option, but you could always rent your points out. This could give you some much needed cash if DH has trouble finding a job. Good luck!!! And I hope you can make your trip!!

Thanks for your help everyone. We would probably bank the points. I never really thought to rent them, but I guess that is a last resort, hopefully it won't come to that
