Her flights kept getting delayed and delayed. She was supposed to get in around 730 pm and didn’t touch down til 1 am. We stayed up most of the night talking <3

Kim, So glad Grace got home. Sorry to hear Richard didn’t get home and hope a new infection isn’t brewing. However, to hug you and make the gains he has, terrific news.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. We were dealt some pretty major news on Monday.

For the past few years, Richard has been in and out of casts because he has something called Charcot foot. It’s diabetes related and I don’t totally understand it. All I know is that it raises the temperature of his feet and casts give some support. His left foot has been a little warm lately so they called in his specialist to take a look. It looks like the Charcot has returned to his left foot.

He has been getting an electrical treatment on his feet to heal them faster from the surgery. Because of this setback they have to stop treatment on his left foot for now. Once both his feet have completely healed from the surgery they are putting him in two casts with strict instructions to not weight bear at ALL...and then they’re sending him home.

This news has hit us like a bomb. Someone from social services is coming over next week to do a home inspection to figure out what mods need to happen for him to come home. There’s talk of building a ramp in the front and adding extra railings to all stairs inside and out. We don’t even own our home, we rent, so I have to get this all cleared with the landlord. We have no bedrooms on the main floor so now I have to dismantle our eating area to make room for a hospital bed. Our main floor bathroom is not big enough for a wheelchair so they’re sending home a commode. Guys, I know we all love our husbands/wives/significant others, but who realistically wants to be responsible for toileting them?

I almost can’t breathe as I write all this. We are so ill equipped for this and I’m terrified he’ll get dropped off with a wave and a good luck.

Life really can drop kick you in the blink of an eye.

Thinking of you and your family and prayers for your strength as you deal with the next hurdle. Glad that Grace is home to help in the next decisions! Hopefully, social services will be able to provide good information and direct you to additional resources. Very scary, but positive thoughts for the progress that Richard has made!

Oh Kim, not the kind of update I was expecting to see. But first, take a breath, take several deep breaths. You will do what you need to do, we all do. Having him home, in spite of all the changes that will need to take place, will get you in a better frame of mind. I hope the landlord lets you do all the things needed to make it more accessible for Richard. Hopefully the dining room into a bedroom/bathroom will only be a temporary thing. We went thru that for a period also, but you do what you have to do for someone you love. Will continue sending you prayers for the strength and peace of mind you are going to need to possess in the coming days. And prayers also for Richard, this can't be easy on any of you! I have read this often but not checked in. I am a physical therapist. Make sure he has a PT order the proper home care equipment. He will need a drop arm commode and removable arm wheelchair is he is non-weight bearing both feet. And he should have home PT to teach him and you how to manage in your home. This is exactly the kind of PT I did and loved. I wish that I could help you.
