Positive experience with FP+! Can't wait to try Bands

Returned recently from a sort of last minute 5 day trip to Florida and thought I'd give some positive feedback to change it up. We did not stay on-site (10 minute drive away roughly) and we had a group of 8 for both of the parks we did.

I found out about a month before the trip that we were going to WDW, and I haven't been keeping up with WDW news since I'm a DLR annual passholder on the opposite coast. I managed to squeak in some reservations at least! Imagine my surprise when I pop over here to read up, and I discover that MK is on this new fastpass+ system that everyone seems to dislike in one way or another. This had me a little worried since we had a few first timers with us, as well as people that hadn't been in over 10 years. I wanted to make sure we got to do everything but I didn't have much time to plan.

A couple days before we left I looked up where the new FP+ kiosks were so I would know where to go once we hit the parks. We had regular card tickets.

Our first day was MK and we headed over to the FP+ kiosk area in Fantasyland after arriving at the park roughly 1.5 hours after opening. We waited in line for a few minutes before a Cast Member scanned all of our tickets and tied our names to them. I named the attractions we wanted (Space, Thunder and Peter Pan since Splash was down) and it only took a few seconds for him to produce multiple schedules. He made sure we had no conflicting reservations and I snapped a photo of the schedule and we were good to go for the whole day!

Let me just say as the usual FP runner, I felt that this system made my "job" a lot easier, since I never had to check wait times or run across the park or really plan anything. However, I'm the kind of person who FP's the same rides every time since they're usually the busiest. We waited in short lines for most of the day and our fastpasses were definitely worth it for the rides we chose (all were 60+ minutes at the times we rode them).

The next day was DHS and we arrived 2 hours after park opening. I had thought FP+ wasn't active in this park yet but it was, and I found myself quite happy that I wouldn't have to run all the way to ToT or RnR for passes while my friends hung out at Star Tours! Since we had arrived so late I was prepared for all Toy Story fastpasses to be taken, and they were. The first FP+ line we saw was long, but a CM quickly showed us to another shorter line and in less than a minute we were planning our schedule. I mentioned we had a dinner reservation and the CM quickly mixed and matched schedules for ToT, RnR, and Star Tours (since no Toy Story) until it worked out, I snapped a pic and we were off for the day.

I found that all I really needed to do was plan when we ended up where so we had minimal walking between attractions, but that's something I usually do anyway even with paper FPs. In the end it worked really well for us, even if we did have 60 minutes to wait for TS, but we definitely had those 60 minutes to spare.

I really liked being able to simply tap my card to enter the parks and use my FP+, and so did the rest of our group. I saw a lot of Magic Bands during our stay, and all I could think about was how easy it would be to have everything on that band. I wouldn't have to pull my card out of my wallet so much, which was the only thing that bothered me. All in all we had a very fun time, and I'm now planning a trip for my family so we can try out the bands relatively soon.

I know a lot of people dislike this system, but I feel like it fits my style perfectly. Of course I didn't have the experience of having to make my FP choices from home or actually use Magic Bands, but I know I would have picked the same FPs I did that day in the parks with the ride closure knowledge I had. There is still room for error and for my opinion to change, but for now I think the new system works really well for me.

Did anyone else have a positive experience? What about with Magic Bands? Are there any major problems I should be prepared for? I know the system is new and I expect problems to come up, but by the time we go back next Jan I hope most things are ironed out. For now we're back to DLR with good old fashioned paper passes.

Thanks for the good feedback! We leave tomorrow, we haven't been since FP+ and MB were implemented. I'm quite scared with all the horror stories but you have given me some hope!:yay:

I hope that no matter what happens you can still enjoy your stay. :)

It's very different from paper passes but I think you should be open to forming your own opinion. I hadn't really read a ton of negative feedback before we went since it was so last minute, maybe that affected how I saw and experienced the system.

Have a good trip!

So glad to hear you had a wonderful trip! :goodvibes

We were there in December, AP holders and staying on-site. And it was a very positive experience for us, too!

The Magic Bands worked perfectly for park entry and opening our room door (we didn't use it for charging), and once I sized mine down I found it quite comfortable to wear. If you have small wrists, it's good to remember that you can remove the outside portion of the band to make it fit better.

I found them comfortable and cute and we didn't have any problems with them falling off. My husband took his off every night, while I left mine on the entire time (they're waterproof!).

Our FP+ was pre-chosen before the tiers came into effect, and that caused some glitches (in the form of the Mickey head turning blue when we walked up to the ride). But we got fixes in for two of our parks on our first day, thanks to a very helpful castmember standing out in front of the Tower of Terror by the FP+ kiosks. And for the others we just got into the habit of using our phone to take a picture of our ride reservations first thing in the morning. If we got a blue Mickey, all we had to do was show the castmember at the entrance to the ride our phone and we were waved right past.

Minor glitches aside, we found that we really enjoyed FP+. We rode Toy Story more than we'd ever ridden on any previous trip, and we got to enjoy the big coasters in the dark, which was a new experience for us. We're early risers, and used to showing up at rope drop, so FP+ was a bonus to our touring style. Our standard approach was to go to a recommended park for rope drop, tour until lunch, eat, and return to our resort for a nap. Then in the evening, we'd go to whichever park we'd booked our FP+ at, and have fun there.

I think your next trip will be terrific! :thumbsup2

I had no idea you could size them down, I was wondering since I have a very small wrist too. I also didn't know they were waterproof, my sister loves the pool and she loves bracelets so that should be a perfect combo for her.

I like the idea of getting a late fastpass even when there are earlier times available. I prefer Thunder Mountain in the dark myself - I wonder if you can request a later time on purpose? I should find out next time.

Yes, you can request a later time. You can actually request any time you like! What happens is you'll sign up for an account on Disney's site. Then you'll enter in your resort reservation number and register your tickets. Sixty days before your resort stay, you'll get to choose your FP+.

Just pick your park, and then pick the rides you want. Disney will offer three suggested itineraries. Ignore them. I usually pick whatever's earliest, because it makes it easier to move things around without conflict. Once you've confirmed your rides, you can then go back and move each one to the exact time slot you want.

So if you want to ride Thunder Mountain at 8pm, you've got it! :thumbsup2

That seems too perfect to me! I will definitely be taking advantage of that. I also like the idea of being able to pick my FPs early, I feel like I won't have to worry about anything after I get on the Express.

Thanks for the info!

we used the magic bands in december as annual pass staying on site, and yes you can attempt to have later times on purpose as long as they are available, its done when you edit your fast pass + choices. we really enjoyed having our tickets and room keys on the bands, less to carry around too, almost don't need a bag at all, just your band and maybe some cash and your phone...

we go back in august and can't wait for the setup of our fast pass + days/times...

Thanks for the different view point of the fastpass plus! I haven't been on here in a while but we recently moved down to Florida (still a couple hours a way but I'll take it!) so I was worried about the negativity and trying to aquire them the day of. Hearing a positive point of view puts me in a different mind set and now I feel excited about our next visit. :yay:
