Portion Size - am I the only one...

I'm not a tiny person but I find that I'm more hungry than normal at WDW. Maybe it's all the walking or the heat (or just the constantly availability of awesome snacks) but I find the counter service meals to be just right, and usually can share an appetizer and eat a whole entree at a TS restaurant.

Absolutely! I walk ten miles a day at WDW, which is considerably more than the three-four I walk at home. I need those calories!

We eat at a lot of signatures for dinner and we find those portions to be normal sizes. The one credit ts places and counter service places have huge portions in our opinion. DH and I share all the time. Sometimes we get our own meal (CHH for instance I get the tuna sandwich and he gets the fish n chips) at CS. We haven't done the dining plan in years but this past trip we got a great cm discount from our friend. We still shared and it helped stretch our credits.

Eta: I don't consider myself a portion snob. Eat how you want! Whatever works. for us it helps us to share meals and we enjoy it.

No,you're not the only one! The portion snobs drive me crazy! The worst part is that most of them won't admit to the possibility that maybe THEY are the unusual ones. It's never, "I'm a very light eater," it's always "OMG what kind of a trough-gobbling hog would you have to be to choke down a whole Disney portion?!?" Or, "The DDP makes no sense - how could a human being who east that much even exist?" Or,"The DDP doesn't make financial sense for us because we're not disgusting gluttons."

Hahahahaha this just made me laugh so hard!

I agree! I am in the gym in the morning, swimming between tropical drinks by the pool in the afternoon and walking all over the world in the evening! Half of an 8oz filet would be more of a snack :)

I really never share a ts except maybe Yak and yeti lo mein but I do sometimes share cs lunches especially if we have an earlier adr time.We like to eat lunch around 1 and then dinner around 7-7:30.I usually don't eat breakfast(bad I know!)If I share though it is not with my dh but it would be one of my kids.Like an adult chicken nugget meal gives you like 8 nuggets and fries so I split with dd(11) and that is enough to fill me up without making me feel bleh in the heat. Then we usually split a pretzel or get a slushie or something later on.I don't think portions are too large-I usually like to save the money too on cs since my dd eats like a bird!

We often share but it is because we don't want to be too full for snacks later on.

I think many of the QS meals are big enough to split. I will agree that some of the TS are not huge portions though.

I keep reading about 'many of the CS meals being large enough to split'. Can you give me some examples please. I really would like to know.

We were just at Disney, ate at several of CS places as usual, but didn't find any with 'huge' portions. We love Sunshine Seasons, Flametree BarBQ, Cosmic Rays to name a few. The chicken meals would be large enough for two children maybe, but not two hungry adults. The 'half chicken platters' we have had were 'very' small chickens, 2 half cup sides and that was it. We never get sodas or desserts, so that's not that many calories for a normal adult, and we're not really large eaters and we're normal weight.

The pork chop meal was average, also the rib platters (not very much meat on most ribs). Anyway, we consider them small - average, but definitely not large.

Last trip I split every meal at Disneyworld with my 3-year old son - and I'm big - 6'3'' 220lbs.

My logic is, it leaves more for dessert and second dessert, which I don't share, natch.

What? It's vacation. I'm not counting calories (I also wake up at 5 every morning and jog for an hour before hitting the parks).

To each their own - hungry, eat more. Stuffed, eat less. It's not like you eat like this every day.

We split the salmon quinoa salad at the commisary at dhs, the chicken meal in tomorrowland, the ribs and chicken at flame tree at ak, the schwarma plate at morocco. This was last trip. I usually share with my mom, and sometimes will just grab a 1/4 of one of my boys hamburgers and a couple of fries.

Eta: I am so impressed that you run before the parks. I run here, but I'd be exhausted if I did both!!

It really depends on what you order.

At MOST Signature eateries, no. But I will tell you my mother and I did split the 16 oz steak at Yachtsman. I don't consider an 8 oz steak a sacrifice.

SOME TS places we could split in Epcot Tutto Italia Chefs De France and Via Napoli come to mind. In DHS we can split the sampler or the fried Chicken at 50's.

As for CS, we frequently split there. I do find most of the CS sandwiches huge and we split them. We do split the rotisserie chickens. We split the schwarma platter ( we get it with pita instead of the roll and then order a second pita) We split at Flame tree, we split at Yak and Yeti CS ( Plus an order of egg rolls) If I must be subjected to WDW pizza:sick: I split the single pizza and a salad.

We split the large lamb and chicken shawarma platter at Tangierine Cafe, we split a pizza and giant caesar salad for two, and an order of zeppoli at Via Napoli, we split ribs at flame tree, we split the chicken and ribs at Cosmic Rays. At BOG lunch we split the pork meal and i got a soup. At 50's PT Cafe we always split the Fried Chicken meal.

Eta: totally forgot about WPE! We share a pizza and a salad.

Am I alone?

No. But I used to get the whole "how can you eat that much?" every time I ate with a friend of mine, and I really did eat about twice what she did at meals. At that time, however, I was still living with my family and so ate at meals but didn't snack; she, OTOH, was a snacker. Now my kids and hubby and I are all snackers, so the DDP wouldn't work for us, not because "it's too much food" in terms of daily calories, but because it's oriented around big meals -- "too much food" all at once. :upsidedow

So I wonder if that's part of it -- snackers versus people who eat big meals. But since I hung out with that friend, I started paying attention to how much people eat at meals; could never see anything like fat people eat bigger meals and skinny smaller, but there are often family patterns, where everyone who lives together eats a similar amount at meal time. We eat as much as we're used to at home, I guess.

But when you compare them to what you get at any chain restaurant around the country, they are about par for the course.

::yes::

If anything, the portions are smaller than I've had in many chains like Applebee's or Bennigan's.

Now, if they'd have some sort of a "Disney Dessert Plan", that I could go for, weight gain be damned!

:thumbsup2

We'd sign up for that! My eldest and I do often share entrees at WDW, but that's because at WDW, we get a lot of junk-food snacks, and we get individual desserts at meals. At home, if we eat out, we're more likely to have the entree, or an appetizer and an entree, then have something dessert-ish a few hours later.

I dont really have anything to add to the thread- but I am laughing so hard over here.

I think one of the reasons people can split a lot of these meals shown here is that they eat more often than we do, have desserts or drinks which are all very filling. When we get a CS meal, that is our 'big' meal of the day, and we don't eat a lot more than that - just something very light later, plus we don't drink (alcoholic or sodas) which are all loaded with calories.

I agree, they aren't and we often do buffets because of that. I think it's the PRICE they think is huge ;) :rotfl2:

Totally, it's vacation and I always eat whatever I want. I wouldn't jog while there, I get enough walking in and swimming daily while there, but I do miss my elliptical, ok not really LOL
