I was just wondering if anyone has brought thier own shade with them to the island. We will be traveling with my mother who is on medication that warns limited exposure to the sun and also will have my 20mth old daughter with us who is very fair skinned (We plan on using high SPF sunblock but were thinking this might provide a little bit of added protection. )While @ walmart the other day we found a sunshade type thing that is portable like one of those fold up camp chairs for $15.00. The pkg says that it opens up to 9 feet across and can fit two adults sitting inside on beach chairs. (from the picture). It is kind of like a 1/2 circle tent type thing. Is something like this allowed on the beach?? I don't want to be dis-courteous and block someones view..... but I don't really think it is THAT BIG.... can someone help?

Carolyn - are you talking about Castaway Cay? There is plenty of shade available. We spent the day at the end of the family beach. There are two loungs chairs and two smaller beach chairs clustered around an umbrella. Kind of like a little "station" for each family. The chairs are positioned under large palm trees which provide plenty of shade.

To be honest with you, I would not have been happy if someone plunked a large umbrella between our "station" and the water. I spent most of my time close to the water where my kids were playing, but I would have been pretty irritated if someone's umbrella blocked my view of the kids when I was at our little "station."

I would say most of the other beaches you will be visiting will have something similar available. On Great Bay Beach at St. Maarten we rented two chairs and an umbrella for $10 per day. This also included 2 free drinks and use of their facilities.

I agree with Mickeyboat. It is disturbing to have someone sit in front of you and proceed to block your view of the kids (at CC). I do understand your situation but I think I would just get off early and find a nice place at the end of the family beach for everyone.

As long as you are willing to set it up at the "back" of the beach behind the rest of the folks I don't see why this would be a problem ... but I have an older version of these "cabanas" that I bought when my grandson was a newborn and it's HOT inside. If you buy it ... I'd try it in the backyard for an hour to see if it's something you want to sit inside.
