We are driving to WDW in Dec 2010. My DD will be 5 and I am hoping to get her a portable DVD player for the trip. Headphones are a MUST - but not the ones that go in her ears.

Does anyone have any recommendations? She needs to be able to have it sit on her lap in the car and not get hot on her legs and be able to take some bouncing without skipping.

TIA

Check out Best Buy...they have some good ones. Wal-mart does too. Also, we have bought both the Phillips ear phones, which are for kids, as well as the ones that Leapfrog put out. They are heavy duty and sit on their head nice and securely. We have 2 portable DVD players, plus 1 built-in, plus a laptop to keep everyone happy for the 24hr drive over 2 days. They are a lifesaver.

I LOVE the Leapfrog headphones. They are sized for a child's head and have a wide band at the top so they aren't too heavy.

No DVD player recommendation though. Do you have a laptop with a DVD player in it?

Yes, the teenager's laptop has a cd/dvd player in it. However, she's off to college next yr, so we will lose it, unless my dh decides to get me a new laptop for Xmas.:lmao:

We bought a Phillips at Walmart on black friday so we paid I think $49 for it and I went ahead a bought a case for it. You can hook it the carseat but she just holds it in her lap inside the case so it doesn't get hot. Its nice to have the case as well because it makes it easy to carry and hols movies. We have 2 other DVD players too for the older kids

Thanks I am going to have to start looking around in the stores. It always helps to have real life experiences with items though.

I bought both my girls a Sony one from Sam's club for trips. They can sit on their laps and do not get hot plus they have a longer battery than many.

I have a GPX and Sony protable DVD. I got hte Sony last year simpley becasue the battery charege in the GPX didn't hold and I neede mine for our plane trip to Disney and the Sony has a 5-hr battery life.

Most brands are fine - I wouldn't recommed COBY as we got it once and after about 15min of use it smelled like it was burning a wire or something inside. We took it back and got the GPX.

As far as holding it on your lap - may I recommend a car case that can be attached to the front seat so your daughter doesn't have to watch i on her lap. We got a soft cases that you can strap between the 2 headrests of the front seats. It holds up the DVD player an my son can comfortably watch it. I only have one sone and his car seat is set in the center of the back seat so the DVD player is in the cetner as well. You can also set up the holder so the DVD player is anchored to the back of either the driver or passenger front seat if you daughter prefers to sit on one side or the other.

I got my holder at Sears - I'm sure you can also find them at Best Buy or Target or the such.

I'm not sure how much money you want to spend, but my son got a Leapster game system for Christmas and he likes playing with it - evne though he's only 3. They have learning gamse for different ages - they even have a Princess and Tinkerbell game cartridges. It's less expensive then an Nintendo DS sysem (about 1/2 the price) and is fun for kids and helps keep them occupied.
Leapfrog has a webiste and sometimes they have good sales or coupon codes.

I know the question is "which dvd player?" I have had a couple and the panasonic.
We now use a netbook instead. A dvd player is $110-150. A netbook is $300+ (MSI Wind U100 IS $299/free shipping at newegg.com.) With and external usb dvd drive I have ripped our favorite movies to the internal hard drive. So when we travel we have a movie player with a 10" screen and no discs to get lost or broken. We can also download all our trip photos and videos to the netbook each night. And when we return we have a functioning computer instead of another device collecting dust on a shelf until our next trip.
So our best dvd player is not a dvd player at all.

Just a note to think twice before having them hold it in their laps...My kids get car sick if they look "down" while driving - even though they are not bothered by car sickness any other time. I ended up safety pinning 2 peices of elastic (to form bands) around the head rest and then slid the screen of dvd player into the loops to form a "hanger". It is cheap, works great, and prevents that "i don't feels so good" feeling!

We have the Sony kids' headphones, too (got them for, like, $1.29 at the Times Square Virgin MegaStore closing sale!!!). They are comfy for the kids and do not allow the volume to increase to dangerous levels.

We have a Mickey Mouse portable DVD player. We got it at Sears a few years ago. Since it is Disney the headphones fit the kids good. It also came with two sets of headphones, which is nice since I have two kids. They hold it while we drive or I can rig it so they do not have to or if they both want to watch (so no fighting over who holds it).
