Portable DVD player on plane?

Im thnking of getting one of these for our plane ride. I just started to research them and I was wondering if there are any that you can recommend that are not too expensive. I prefer to stay close to $100.

Also, are you able to plug it in on the plane...I really dont want to rely on a battery charge. Thanks!

We bought one about 5 years ago for this very reason. I believe ours is a JVC brand. I see them advertised in Target sometimes on sale for $88...although I think they are regularly $100 or less unless you want the big brand names.

We got a lot of use out of ours. Now we hardly use it because we bring laptops and we can watch dvd's on them-less to carry since we'd bring the laptops anyway. But I think they are a good deal, for the price, you can't go wrong and plus they are great to use on long car rides or car trips.

we ALWAYS bring our portable DVD player for use on plane rides. Our DD2 responds very well to a familiar movie. makes the trip enjoyable for all...

You will have to rely on battery on the plane, not possible to plug it in. we have found outlets to charge a battery in the airport, but not on the plane.

many airlines now have TV screens for every seat, but you must wear a headset for sound......not something that my DD will do.......best of lucK!! annabug

Last time we flew, I saw a DVD player rental station IN the airport! I think it was only for specific destinations (where they had another kiosk, I imagine), but it seemed really convenient! Check out your airport, see if they have that and if it would work for you.

Portable DVD players are great to help pass the time on the airplanes! However, as a former flight attendant (and aunt to three young toddlers), I just want to remind everyone that you should use earphones when using your DVD players (MP3 players, game players etc.) on the plane. This is a common courtesy to other passengers, who may not want to listen to your movie. I know a lot of young children don't like to wear earphones, but perhaps you could find a comfortable pair for your child, and get the child used to them before you go.

You can buy a universal battery for a portable DVD if you will be using it more than the two or so hours that a DVD battery lasts. Target has a three hour battery for about $35. Radio Shack has a 6 hour for about $50. The universal battery plugs into the AC adaptor input and fits all portable DVDs. We bought one for a five hour plane ride, but didn't use it much. Between takeoff, landing, eating snacks, etc., the DVD player was only in use about two hours anyway.

I could HUG you right now!!! DH bought me this laptop for Christmas and I just looked to see if it has a DVD player and IT DOES!!! Ive had this for almost 5 months and did not know that!!!! Im such an idiot!! Buying some headphones will be much less expensive than buying a portable DVD player too!

I do have another question though...

Does it count as your carry-on? I was planning on bringing a carry-on for us and a bag with the laptop in it. Is that allowed? I havent flown since 1999 and so much has changed since then.

I agree with you! As a former flight attendant as well, it can be very bothersome to other passengers to have listen to someone elses movie. You may think it is on low enough to not bother anyone, but it's usually not. It is hard to hear above the engine noise sometimes and so the sound has to be louder then you think. As far as an inexpensive one, my MIL got my DS one at Best Buy that wasn't your typical name brand for $99. It has worked great and holds a long charge. Unfortunately there is no way around the battery, because planes don't have outlets. Just charge it the day before you leave and don't turn it on until the FA's say you can use electronic devices and put your cord in your suitcase. Then the day before you head home recharge it.

I always bring my laptop with me. My son watches a movie and uses headphones. He likes the laptop better because the screen is bigger. I found a backpack for laptops and works out great. I've never had a problem carrying it on board along with my purse.

I am have a 2 year old and a 4 year old so I understand the need to travel with a DVD player and we have one that we use as well. I know the importance of keeping little ones quiet and entertained. DH and I had the rare (ok, first time ever) opportunity to go away alone a few weeks ago. As much as I love my kids and missed them on this trip I was not happy about listening to Dora blasting from the DVD player in the seat in front of me. We actually got up and moved to free seats after we took off just for that reason. I would not have been a happy camper if I had to listen to that for 3 hours.

We will be flying in 3 days and will have the DVD player with us. I plan to let my kids know that if they wish to watch a movie that they must have earphones on.

please have your kids wear the earphones. i have sat by folks whose kids "won't wear them" and hearing someone elses movie is not a way to spend a flight. when ours is on, the earphones go with it--ds2 actually will watch, without wanting to listen. weird.

I agree. Our experience has been that laptops never count against your carry-on allowance. We flew both Southwest and Spirit Airlines in the past 6weeks and none of our laptops were counted as a carry-on. I brought my purse, laptop & an actual carry-on bag for myself and never was questioned or told I was over the bag allowance. Maybe it depends on the airline you fly?

On our flight to Hawaii last summer I was able to get seats with a car-type plug-in (like a cigarette lighter) under the seat. Not all aircraft have them, and on aircraft that do, they're only in specific seats. SeatGuru will indicate if your aircraft has them and what seats they're on.

Wow...I would never even have thought you could plug your laptop in on the airplane. I always just go on battery. Good to know just in case. I will have to check out this website and see if any of the carriers we fly have this.

Tip on kids that "won't wear headphones" -- they will if they think that the player won't work without them. Make it an ironclad rule that the player cannot be turned on without the headphones plugged in. If the child prefers to watch with no sound (and some will), that's fine, but keep the headphones plugged in at all times anyway.

Be sure to get headphones with a volume slide on the cord. If you have multiple kids using one unit, go to RadioShack and buy a splitter adapter that will let you plug multiple headphones on a single jack.

Also, if you are relying on charging the battery in the airport, carry along a multiple power tap plug and a short extension cord. Electrical outlets are very rare in airport gate areas, so you will have much better luck if you are prepared to share.
