Portable DVD player headphones for kids?

I apologize for the cross post. I put this originally on the budget board, but then though the great parents here could help me out too!

We have a portable DVD player, and I was thinking about buying some headphones for it for our daughter on car trips. We also want to get ones that will have good sound quality for an airplane, as well. Since our dd is only 2.5, I don't think that the earbuds would work very well. Anyone have any suggestions for these? I know they have the really expensive noise reduction ones, but I'd hate to spend 50-60.00. Plus, I think they would be too big for her head and ears. Any ideas for a quality headphone for younger kids?

Also, she has never worn earphones before, so I'll probably need to get her used to them. Not sure how to do this, either. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone!!

my 3 yr old just got a portable dvd player for his birthday in July. i just went to wal-mart and bought $5 Sony headphones. The ones that are used with 'walkmans' and portable cd players. they work just fine. hope this helps!!

sony makes a noise reducing model in your price range - I bought them for my kids. They do not work as well as my senhauser (or however you spell it) ones, but they are much less expensive.

i got mine at walmart as well. the inexpensive ones work just fine. you have to keep in mind that kids also tend to be kind of rough on headphones (not taking care when the pull them off, sitting on them) so i would'nt put out much money on them.

I use the "free" ones that are on the airplane and my DD has never complained. (We always fly United which has the earphones, not all airlines do.) Noise cancelling ones would sound better of course, but she really doesn't care. I can't imagine a 2.5 yo would care especially if she's never worn them before. For that age, I would use the free ones or get very very cheap ones.

We just bought a van w/ the wireless headphones. My dh said dd 3.5 would NEVER use them.

On the way home, she wanted her movie on and I said, "Oh, You want your movie on? You've got to wear these." She's worn them ever since.

But I'm with the group that says go for the $5 ones. The ones with the van are so big on her. If they were the $5 ones, my dh could figure a way to modify the size of them to fit her better, but with these, he doesn't dare.

Thanks so much for the great replies...looks like I am just going to have to buy a pair and hope for the best. I'm thinking that spending money on the more expensive ones might not be the best idea, especially if she refuses to wear them at all. Thanks again for all of the advice!

My youngest (2.5) would not wear regular sized headphones, they were to big. We bought a pair from a store that were located right next to the Leap Pads. They were about $10 and are made for smaller heads. She loves them because they fit and are bright colors. I love them because now I don't have to listen to her DVDs and they do not let the sound get very loud. One of the best investments I've made. Have fun!!!

What a great idea! I have been looking for "kid-size" headphones for a while - most are just too big for my kids and they won't wear them. I have found some on-line but they are pretty expensive. I will have to take a trip to TRU and see if they have them by the Leap stuff!!

I agree my DDs both us the cheapy headphones. They dont know the difference & they work just fine. I sit next to them on the plane & I can barely hear them. When I first introduced the head phones was a couple weeks before we went to disney & I bought the portable cd players (not very expensive) so they could listen to the DVD Books in the car. They have different tastes at 2 and 5 at the time. I told them they each had to use their headphones in the car if they wanted to listen to different books. Used them every since.
