DH and I are interested in purchasing a portable charger for our iPhones/iPad for our trip in August. Anyone have a brand/type they recommend? Thanks!

I have tried a bunch in preparation for our trip (6 days, yay!). I finally got a sony cycle energy. It's great for iphone and ipad but it's slightly bigger than my phone. That being said, it charges 3 or 4 times before I have to charge it again. It was about $70

I wouldn't leave home without my Jackery.

I get two full iPhone charges with it. And it has a 2.1A to charge the iPad.
They also have smaller and larger versions.

There are a few recommendations in this thread:

I just picked up an Anker Astro Mini on Amazon for $20 but I have an Android.

I've got the Anker Astro Mini as well. It will usually fully charge my iPhone 5s at least twice, sometimes more depending on how drained the iPhone is and if I'm using it while it charges. I love it because it's about the size of a tube of mascara, so it's easy to carry around with me.

Patriot Fuel+

With an iPad and an iPhone you'll want something with large capacity like around 8000mah for whatever charger you get.

The Fuel+ 7800Mah one I have charges my iPhone 4 about 4 times so I'm figuring that's one iPad charge and about 2 iPhone charges.

Also you'll want to see if it'll support 2.5v along with 1v USB (2.5v ports charge faster and I think are required for iPads?)

I picked up the Anker 6000mAh charger about a year ago and have been happy.

I was initially tempted to get the 12000mAh or 15000mAh version just for that 'extra power' bit. Then it dawned on me: This is for backup power, not main power. I'll be using it for when I enter the parks, have heavy use on my phone and it just doesn't quite make it until the end of the day. I don't need a huge brick so I can charge it 10 times during the day, just enough to charge 2-3 phones (like if my daughter's phone goes dead on the same day).

In disney now and using our Jackery Bar. My wife's phone holds very little charge and this ext battery is completely eliminating any real stress she would have had from her phone dying. Plus I can use it to keep mine topped off and it can also use it to charge my reg camera. We picked it up at amazon for $29 a couple of weeks ago and it was so worth it. We spend a lot of weekends on baseball fields for our son and it made a big diff not worrying about having our phones die. The Jackery Bar works perfect for us, fast charging, rugged aluminum case and compact. If you need more charging capacity for say an iPad they make a larger version too.

I purchased the Jackery Giant for our June trip. It can charge 2 phones at once, and we will have 6 IPhones, so I wanted the extra port.

I can recommend the Anker brand. This is the one we got and it works great:
Anker® 2nd Gen Astro3 12000mAh (4A Output) Portable Charger Triple USB External Battery Pack with PowerIQ™ Technology

Keep in mind the mAh associated with the chargers, in relation to the mAh of your phone (or other devices) battery, determines how many charges you will get out of the device. So say you have a 12000mAh portable charger and your phones battery is 2100mAh. To figure out how many charges you can get out of it you'd want to deduct 20% of the original mAh and then divide by your phones battery; in this case (12000 * 0.8) / 2100 ~= 4.5 full charges. This gives you a rough idea of how many full charges you can get out of a portable charger; if your phone isn't full drained, obviously you can get more charges out of it.

Also, watch for how many amps each USB port on the device is. More and more smart phones are moving to use 2A charging ports. In the device I purchased, it has 3 ports and will charge at 4A between them; this means I can charge two 2A phones, or I could charge 1 2A device and 2 1A devices at the same time.

Finally, the larger device (mAh wise) you get the longer it takes to charge. I made sure the device I chose would be able to fully charge during the hours I typically sleep.

For my iPhone, I love the Mophie JuicePack Air for my 5s. What I like most about it is that it is a case, so I don't have to carry around something extra, and it charges at the same time that I charge my phone. With a lot of the case-style chargers, you have to charge the battery pack separately, but you don't have to do that with the JuicePack. Love it!

I charge it overnight with my phone like usual, unplug it around 8am, and then when my phone starts running out of battery around 7pm or 8pm, I'll turn on the JuicePack and have a full charge (or around 85-95%) within the hour. :)

Yeah ... I've used a Mophie product with my iPhone for years now and I really like it. The case renders your phone a bit clunky but you can't beat it for guaranteeing you get a full day out of your phone even when you're stressing it way more than normal. Biggest advantage being you don't have to keep up with anything separate. You charge the phone and charge the Mophie and off you go.

I owned a Mophie Juice pack for my iPhone 4S, but it wouldn't stay plugged in if I didn't hold it in. Is there one that charges well that I can put in my backpack while it is charging my phone and expect it to remain plugged to the phone?

I bought a Yubi YP250A and love it. It's bigger than a lipstick, but very easily goes into a pocket or very small purse. I use it with my iPhone4s, but it's compatible with many phones. The charge is pretty fast and will recharge my phone fully at least 3 times before needing to plug it in. :)

Does anyone know where I can get one of these in store? We leave tomorrow and I don't have time to order. I checked the best buy and target websites, but can't seem to find in stock.

I've not looked there but maybe a Radio Shack or cell phone store would have them.

Worst case scenario there's usually a store in the airport that sells electronic travel accessories like that at markup. (There may also be a Best Buy vending machine that has them too).
