That's basically the same deal I got. When I added a couple of UV filters and the 8 GB level 10 memory card, it wound up being around $910.00.

I already had a large camera bag, and a smaller tote bag which fit the camera, so I didn't need to get those.
They were left over from my 30 year old Olympus OM10.

So I can maybe stop this off topic, but greatly appreciated Q&A, you are happy with your investment I take it? I just feel uneasy when investing that much into camera.

Hey I need a few DSLR Veterans help? Please PM me if you have yahoo or msn or what ever you use. I need some help with cameras.

Thanks

What have you been looking at?

I personally went Canon because of the way it felt in my hands. Nikon is good as well. I am planning on upgrading this fall to the 60d and passing my older slr to my kids. Have you gone to your local store yet and played with them? That is the biggest first hurdle for anyone. Go play with the T2i because on the Canon side that is the biggest bang for the buck right now. It is a year old because the T3i is out and retailers are reducing the price on them. It is basically the same camera without a few extra features. It would be a great first slr. Canon lenses are generally cheaper than nikon and I've found the selection to be better. Warning though...it is an expensive hobby once you get started. :)

I'll pm you with any other ideas or if you have any questions. Always check amazon as well. There is a message boards for the canon users that is very similar to the disboards. It is called:

I played with a nikon a bit tonight in a walmart. But I havent touched a canon yet. 60d huh. Nice. But what is comes down to is I know nothing about the specs of these new ones. I am somewhat familiar, but I want one I will have for some time and not worry too much about the feeling left behind with the tech I would have.

Yes I am very happy with it.

I totally agree with going to a local store.
I went to Target, and they wouldn't let me try the zoom lens.
I went to Best Buy and was ignored for 20 minutes. I then went to Ritz Cameras, and was helped a considerable amount by very knowledgeable staff. I was able to play with several cameras and lenses before making my decision, and they had the same deal as Target and Best Buy.

Get an idea of what models you want to look at, then go to an actual camera store.

These are the models I am looking at:
Nikon D3100
Nikon D5100
Canon T2i
Canon 60D

Also Looking for a nice VR anti vibration lense, maybe 55-300MM to go with the stock 18-55MM that comes with them.

I own both the Nikon D60 and now the 5100. Loved the D60 as and entry level, but the 5100 is awesome. I hardly put it down. My son's first SLR is the Canon T3i. I started with Canon and switched to Nikon's because I prefer the lenses. My son prefers the Canon for the same reason I prefer the Nikon. What it comes down to with these to brands is personal taste.

Go to a reputable camera store, steer clear of the Big Box stores. You will find a much more knowledgable staff and be able to try multiple camera's and lenses and see what fits your needs. You will pay the same price. At least that is what we found here. They are willing to match prices to get your business.

Good luck, but as you are hearing, this can get to be an expensive fun in a hurry. But it is a blast all the same.

So the canon 60d is a lower model compared nikon 5100? Do I have that right?

I just feel uneasy when investing that much into camera.

For the record I'm a Canon user (7D at the moment, but there are cheaper options - I started with one of the basic Digital Rebels). I think Canon and Nikon are broadly similar though if you don't already have lenses, etc.

Yeah I dont already have lenses. I am looking for a good setup for Disney world photo taking but I am tired of point and shoots.

One of my main concerns when I bought my camera was that I am no expert by any means, and I didn't want to get too much camera for my experience.
I focused on what I could get for an entry level camera that had good automatic features, but could also be used manually, so I can learn how to do that as well.
I didn't want to get frustrated and stop using the camera after shelling out that kind of money.
I believe both Canon and Nilon offer cameras that meet that standard.

I agree, hints why I am staying d5100 or below.

Sorry I misread your post. Nikon d60 is lower than d5100?

Yes the D5100 came out around Easter and has the ability to shoot video as well.

The Nikon D5100 and the Canon T3i are basically the same camera with few differences. At least not that the rookie user would notice. They came out at about the same time. I purchased both of them the same day. I have the Nikon and my son has the Canon.

Both are excellent cameras. Many movies are now being shot by digital SLR camera's, for example much of Black Swan was shot using the Canon 5D, which is next up for my son.

For Either brand, it comes down to choice and feel. Can't go wrong with either. Getting the right lenses for what you shoot will be a bigger deal.

Thank you soo much and thanks to others for there tolerance of me asking these questions. I am leaning to Nikon D5100 so far. Because I can get one for $761.99 from bestbuy, Ritz camera places are far more expensive in my area than BB or Target.

I am looking at a couple of different lenses: But open to suggestions!

- Nikon 55-200mm DX VR Lens (I found one used for $150.00 locally. Is there anything I should look for since it is used to see if it is any good?)

- Nikon 55-300mm VR Lens (But that is a 400 dollar lens) SO not too sure.

This question has nothing to do with photography, sorry.:) Are sweet potato pancakes available in the food court? That was my wife's favorite breakfast at WDW. We would make a trip to Boatwrights no matter where we were staying just for those pancakes.

Not too sure, Andre, Webstah, anyone know about this?

The sweet potato pancakes were not available when we were down there, only the sweet potato chips they make for sandwiches.

AND, you CAN take pictures of the food, many people do ;)

My hands down favorite all around lenses is the 18-200 DX VR. Reviews are mixed on it, but for an all around lenses it is fantastic. Bought my son a similar lenses for his Canon t3i. It is on my Camera 90% of the time. In Disney world it is the only lenses I use. Even though there are times I wish I had my bag of lenses for the occasional picture it has never been often enough to carry it around. I never use the stock lenses. Plus the 18-200 more than covers what the stock lenses can do.

I have never bought a used lenses but I would want to try it out and not only use it to see if it functions correctly but to also see if any dust or other object show up on your pictures that you may not see in the lenses with your natural eye.

Hi! Did you have the pancakes at breakfast? I only ask b/c Boatwright's doesn't serve breakfast anymore-only dinner.

That's all I could contribute! :)
