We will be vacationing in Sept (after the Free dining) & we have an opportunity to stay @ SOG for $119 per night (my dad is a vet). We are currently booked at PORS. Please let me know anything & everything about SOG, the good, the bad etc. Thanks!

I was only ever at SOG way back when I was a kid and it was still the Disney Inn, but a friend stayed there a few years ago and said the rooms were big, but transportation was iffy. Since it is just across the street from Poly, you can walk to the Poly and just jump on the monorail to get to the MK. Everything else is bussed, and I'm not sure if it is part of the Disney bussing system.

But if you want to stay in each of the hotels, and this might be your only chance to stay at SOG...:rolleyes1

I would highly recommend staying at SOG. It really is a deluxe resort. They have the biggest rooms on property. Great resort, relaxed and safe. Since it's military you also have their security. It is a very beautiful resort. We have stayed several times and have never had any problems with the hotel, food or transportation. Close to Poly so you can walk over and ride the monorail or take the buses. Remember you are comparing a moderate to a deluxe.

I just stayed at Shades of Green (hubby is DOD) in March and was quite surprised and pleased with the facility. Property is clean and beautiful. Rooms are very spacious and the view was nice. Beside the reasonable rooms, the food on the property was also "family friendly" priced. The gift shop also had great prices.

The only negative was to go to the bar/restaurant, you had to go outside, and of course when we were there, we experienced the obligatory tortential rainfall! We didn't have any troubles with the transportation. Definately we would stay there again.

I also wanted to add that my dad has a DD214 & the website shows that we can only stay in Sept. or jan. I am seriously thinking I am going to switch resorts & stay at SoG, i'd be crazy not to, the $savings is great. I am a little concerned w/ how DS11 & DD6 would like the SoG pool (crazy, I know). We've been going to Disney for years & our most recent stay was at AKL, we weren't thrilled w/ it & the kids said they liked the pool at CSR better. We were going to tryPORS b/c the pics of the pool slide were "cool".

Not sure why the web says only Sept or Jan unless you mean for the extra discount. You should be able to stay anytime. Even if the web says no rooms available call anyway, at 80% it shuts down the site and only shows no rooms.

omg , you would be crazy not to.. sog is AWESOME!! I just got back there and seriously, its the most friendly , peaceful place i've ever stayed!! with refridgerators in the rooms and beautiful views its simply wonderful. I brought my mil and mother and we either took the bus to the ttc in the morning or walked a very short walk to the poly. We even saw an alligator on our way over!!! I LOVE the shades.. i wouldnt stay anywhere else, not even if I had all the money in the world

SOG without a doubt. You never know if you'll get another chance. The vet program might not be repeated. You can also look here

SOG

BTW: Sep & Jan you can stay if you are a veteran with a DD214, otherwise you have to meet the normal eligibility requirement. This program has been around for a couple of years and might not be repeated - you never know.

Just back from Yacht Club. The Shades of Green is just as nice if not nicer (as far as the rooms go). The SOG pool is nothing spectacular, but for price and location it can't be beat. The rooms are much bigger than Disney Deluxe Rooms and the baths have a private vanity. I didn't like having an open vanity at the Yacht Club.

The only time I have ever stayed on property at Disney is at the SOG so I really have nothing else to compare it with. The hotel is beautiful and the grounds are even better. We had a room facing the golf course and it was so nice in the am to get up before the kids and have my coffee on the balcony and watch the flamingos and ostritchs walking around in the mist. Deluxe accomidations at value prices....who can beat that? The good- STARBUCKS!!! The cafe had some great bakery in the morning. We didn't eat any other meals there, but my MIL did have one lunch and said it was good. The AAFES where you can buy little things you need like soda and milk and even some souvineers at less than Disney prices. The rooms are huge. It's rather peaceful there as well. My only complaint was the walking to the room. After a tiring day at the parks, walking ALLLLL the way down from the garage, then across the lobby, then back up.....only to walk right back down to take the kids to the pool. But I'd guess any of the large resorts are like this.

We really only used the pool at night after leaving the parks and there was usually only 1 or 2 other families out at that time. It's a large pool, but basic. No theme, no slides. But the kids had fun. We had a car for our trip, but we did use the transportation a couple times. I used the buses with one son. I had no problem going to and from Epcot. My husband took the other on the monorail and walked back from the Poly. Only takes 5 minutes or so to walk to and from there.

We're going in Sept to take advantage of the free dining plan and staying at the AS Sports. First time in a Disney owned property. The kids were disappointed not to be staying at SOG again, but when I showed them some pictures of the giant football field, they were all about it. It won't be as nice a place I know, but I'm not a hotel snob. I've stayed in much worse places showing dogs for years. LOL Though if SOG was on the free dining plan, we'd be back there in a heartbeat. Our hotel room is a place to sleep and shower. It's Disney!! Who has time to sit around anyway? So for me, I'd never pay deluxe for any vacation no matter how pretty some of the places are.....but SOG gives you that stay without that price.

Not to intrude on your thread, but can any of the SOG veterans tell me, can I still go over there to get some Starbucks coffee or use the AAFES even thought I'm staying at another property? TIA
