POR- not overly impressed

We stayed at POR from 5/14-5/21. We stayed in building 14. I hear so many rave reviews about this resort. It was not bad but did not meet my expectations. The room was not overly clean. There were long black hairs stuck all over the shower wall. Also, the soap dish had someones soap scum still stuck to it. I had to wip the drawers out myself because the were filthy. I asked mousekeeping to come and clean the room properly but the problems were not rectified. The some of the commom areas were not overly clean either. The area outside the food court has nice white benches that you can sit on and look at the water. However, the cigerette buckets were so overflowing with butts that the smell of cigerettes was too overwhelming for me to even sit there. Dirty dishes sat on a table on the outside eating area for the entire last 24 hours we were there. The main pool was very, very crowded. We finally found a quiet pool and liked that much better. The food court did not have much of a selection and had a confusing layout. However the food was pretty good. We ate several breakfasts there and the danish was excellent. I had a Taco salad for lunch and that was good as well. We ate dinner at Boatwright's one night. That food was average. The service was good. The bus service was also good as well. I'm not sure we would go back to this resort. I keep thinking I must have missed something as POR always gets such great reviews.

From what I've read on these boards, housekeeping can be hit or miss at any resort, any level. If my room had been in the condition you described, I would have gone right back to the front desk and insisted on a new clean room or for the current one to be cleaned immediately. There's no excuse for that kind of sloppiness!
Every time we went past the area outside the food court, it was completely clean and I never saw a dirty table or saw any cigarette butts. I wonder if it depends on who's on staff shift by shift since we were there May 20-23!!! We only used the pools at night and the Quiet Pools were nearly empty, the main pool a bit busier, but certainly not crowded.
Sorry you had such a negative experience...I was actually surprised by how much better POR was than I'd expected.

Since they didn't fix the mousekeeping problems, did you talk to a manager? I would have asked to be moved if possible.

I would contact the resort general manager with your concerns. As for the dishes left on the outside area by the foodcourt, it's a shame the people who left them there couldn't clean up after themselves - however, it's no excuse for the POR maintenance staff to not clean it up when it was obvious someone was done and left stuff there.

This is just me, but if I saw some dishes on a table and it was bothering me - and they were there for a 24 hour period, I would have thrown them away myself - or contacted someone inside the foodcourt so that someone could be aware of the situation so that it was resolved. To me, it's sorta like when I'm grocery shopping and someone leaves their cart in a parking spot instead of putting it in the designated cart corral. I walk over and put it away. I'm not saying you should have had to clean up the dishes, but I might have.

The overflowing cigarette buckets should definitely be reported. That's just nasty! :sad2:

We loved POR when we were there in 2003 and were very much impressed with the clean surroundings in the public areas and our room. We also thought the food court had a great selection that appealed to us.

Hopefully you had a good time even though you had some problems. :wizard:

We were at POR Late April thru early May for a 10 night stay and had no complaints whatsoever. Our room was very clean and mousekeeping did a great job daily. We even received 3 towel animals during our stay. I thought the food court was fine for a food court and Boatwrights was very good. Our quiet pools were not very quiet the first few days of our stay but then they cleared out quite nice. I did notice some full ash tins near some of the benches . Not very appealing to me either, however, we never sat on the benches so we didn't have to smell them. I agree that they should be cleaned regularly. In any case our stay was very comfortable and since we enjoyed it so much we'll be visiting again in early December. Can't wait to return !
Very sorry to hear you had such disappointments. I wouldn't give up though. Maybe it was under-staffed that week for some reason or overly crowded. Whatever the case might be, as you said that you heard so many good things about the resort maybe it was just a not so good week. We just absolutely loved it! The wildlife were great also. I had a bunny eating out of my hand and my husband shared his lunch with a crow one day. Sat right at the table with him. Not to mention all the ducks and squirrels. As for the poor response from housekeeping I would probably contact the resort and once again let them know of your complaint. That might be something they have to work on. We stayed in Bldg. 37 AB and loved it. I'm going to request # 26 next time. That bldg looked extra cozy to me. Hope you'll give it one more try and next time find the magic we had! :flower:
