With Port Orleans having exterior doors, it seems like you would generally keep your curtains closed for privacy. Is it worth it to pay extra for the view at this resort?
All 3 times at POR we had our blinds closed the whole trip - we only saw the view as we were leaving to go to the parks or coming home. For us view isn't really as important as location.
I have paid for a 'river view' twice......didn't think it was truly worth it. I would rather pay for a preferred location and be closer to buses and the food court.
zero. We were in a Mansion. You have to look over the walkway/outside hallway to see a "view". Plus, we barely had our drapes open. I didn't want people looking in our room.
I think it depends. I know some people do pull a chair out onto the walkway and sit outside their rooms. Personally, I wouldn't pay for an upgraded view without a balcony. We tend to keep our drapes/blinds closed. I think the riverview rooms can be more convenient to things, but as a PP said, you can get the same thing by booking a preferred room.
I personally don't like to look out or walk out to see all the cars in the parking lot. Other then that, I don't care about the view. It could be a big bush or the side of a wall, just no cars.
The view is really not worth paying for at POR! We did get it once. You only look at it when you are outside coming or going, so it is nice for a free upgrade, but I wouldn't pay extra $$ for it again. As others have said, preferred location is a good choice to pay for if you have any extra $$ in the budget.
It feels nice to be staying at a room with a view -- when you're outside approaching your room. But when you're inside your room, people walk by right next to your window, so you don't keep the curtains open. I think it's human nature to look into windows with the curtains open. Spend for preferred location, but not the view. I think I can say that for all the moderates, since they don't have balconies.
We always book pool view. The pool is right outside your door. I hate looking onto the parking lot. We have hung with folks outside the room many times. Many adult beverages. No beat up cars to stare at.
I think the view has zero importance at the mods. Give me a good location every time.
And I really dislike it when people drag their furniture into the passageways and camp out there. On our last trip one woman actually complained loudly and long that she had to shift her butt out of her chair and move it so I could get my wheelchair past her. And then it seemed like the volume of conversation was in direct proportion to the amount of booze enjoyed. While babies and tired families were trying to sleep. Not very courteous. It's a Disney resort, not an econolodge.
I always book GV because I don't want to be in the back facing cars, hearing car doors slamming shut and beeping from people locking car. Also I prefer to be close to river path for convienence of getting to food court, pool & resort shop.
I do leave curtain open if I'm dressed, during day. I hate sitting in a dark room. I only keep curtain closed at night or when we're changing.
I love staying at POR. I will generally choose the room based on availability. If I have a choice to pay for standard, garden, water/pool, or river view I will probably choose garden because the price difference to not look at the parking lot usually isn't that much of a difference. If I had to choose between standard and river view I will probably choose standard. Now, if I want to stay at POR and river view is my only option I will pay for it because that's where I want to stay and to me it's worth it. Like a lot of other posters have said...at the moderates location really does trump view.
We usually take the middle ground and get GV. During the day we keep our drapes open most of the time, except when changing of course. We enjoy letting in the daylight, it really brightens up the room. Why do I care if I am sitting at the table and someone walks by and glances in, more privacy then some of the Deluxe balconies.
When we stayed at POR I purposely selected standard view because I knew we'd have a better shot of being close to the bus stop in an Alligator bayou room for 5. The garden and river view buildings can be a little more remote. (I had memories from when I was a teenager and it felt like we walked forever to get to our room from the bus.) We ended up in one of the closest spots you could be to the food court without paying for preferred which was excellent for us because we had free dining and was very convenient for our refillable mugs. If we ever went to POR again with free dining I would consider paying for the preferred location.
If you ask for and get the right rooms you can be only a 5 minute walk across the bridge to the lobby. We stayed at Magnolia and are again this year and it's a fine spot even for those who don't like to walk much.
