POR..all was great except for smoking

In my experience, smokers don't give a darn about anyone. They throw their butts wherever they stand, toss lit cigs out the windows of moving cars, light up in smoking-restricted areas, smoke in non-smoking rooms, etc., etc., etc..

With such a disregard for their own health and that of their families - do you think they give a care about anyone else ? Heck no.

Sammie: Kinda sounds like she's referring to all smokers to me!

To me, that would have meant she would have said, "in my experience "all" smokers etc, which she did not say.

Besides as I stated all the smokers she knows might act that way.

If I say all the men I know act like jerks, that is not the same as saying, all men act like jerks.

DH and I spent a long weekend at WDW and POP a week ago, and I couldn't believe how much smoke I inhaled. I put the responsibility squarely on WDW for not prominently posting the smoking rules in the parks, for not enforcing the smoking rules in the parks, and for not having designated smoking areas at the resorts (once again, prominently posted and enforced!)

Our first morning at POP, the patio outside the foodcourt was a haze of smoke. It was disgusting--we could not possibly have eaten outside. I realize the resorts don't regulate smoking outdoors, but they need to--there are way too many people concentrated in certain area (like the food court patio) to think that people are not affected by second hand smoke.

I am an ex-smoker, and I think most smokers don't realize how truly awful cigarettes smell to us non-smokers (speaking from my own experience as a smoker!). :sunny: The clothes I wore at POP and the parks actually stunk of smoke--I could smell the smoke when I was loading the washing machine at home.

I do think MOST smokers would follow the rules if they were clear, prominently posted, and enforced! :earsgirl:
I would like to share our recent experience for anyone who thinks that their smoking doesn't impact others. No bashing, just our experience.

We arrived at Pop Century, a resort we love, around 9:30pm. We walked through that same haze of smoke not only outside the food court but all along the tables by the HD pool since our room was there also. We went to our room, changed, then walked back to the food court to get a bite to eat since we hadn't had dinner. Smoke was literally everywhere along the whole route. We then went back and sat by the pool as much away from the smoke as possible, though some of course continued to waft in our direction. (It was a surprise trip for our twins' 8th birthday and they'd been looking forward to swimming in the HD pool all day).

DH's sinuses immediately flared and he began coughing; by bedtime he was wheezing. For the rest of our trip he continued with the cough that started that night, and by the fourth day of our trip he had full blown bronchitis. This is not the first time he's had this happen as a direct result of irritation from smoke so unfortunately, he's familiar with the pattern. (And yes, he'd been completely fine when we left).

DH suffers in silence. So instead of enjoying the sights of the Boardwalk on our last night as we'd planned, all he could do was tank up on medication and go to bed. We'd been looking forward to that for weeks and he would not normally miss it. He also enjoyed a nice hacking cough all throughout our vacation.

Outdoor smoking does imact others.

This is so true. Again, I think smokers don't smell their own smoke. Otherwise, how could anybody in good conscience smoke in a outdoor patio where dozens of other people (including numerous children!) are within 20 feet on all sides? Disney needs to address this and create designated smoking areas at the resorts.

Pea-n-me, those of us who object to the amount of smoke we have to inhale at WDW should write letters to Disney (real honest-to-gosh letters--I think they are taken more seriously than emails!) and ask Disney to address these issues.

Just an observation on smoking at WDW- when we first started going 20 years ago people would smoke throughout the outdoor areas of the Parks, I don't think there was any nonsmoking policy or smoking only areas. I think it was 3-4 years ago, could be wrong, that the Parks were made nonsmoking except for designated areas. I have noticed that it has taken a few years but now it seems to me most of the smoking is done in these designated areas (although I still see guests blithely walking through crowds smoking, I don't think they got the memo).

Anyhow, I wonder that now that Disney has gotten the message across to some extent that there are designated smoking areas in the Parks if they will start making the resorts nonsmoking- inside and outside- except for designated areas.

Wouldn't be a bad idea - but it probably still wouldn't stop the complaints.. Some people just can't get through the day without complaining about something or another.. ;) It would be great if we could live in a "perfect" world, but it's never gonna happen - always something going on that will get under someones skin.. :flower:

Yup, I agree with this one too. Even if there were designated smoking areas, the smoke and smell would still waft over to whereever the complainer was, even if the smoking area was out in the parking lot - then they'd smell it when they went to get in their cars! I am an ex-smoker and can smell the smoke and it is an awful smell but if I have to walk through a cloud of it, I kinda just hold my breath for the second it takes to walk through. If someone lights up at the table beside me, I move if it's so bad that I can't stand it for the 4 minutes it takes the person to smoke the cigarette. It's that easy. Now, I'm gonna get the people saying "why should I have to hold my breath" or "why should I be the one to move", well #1-it is a free country, smoking is not illegal and Disney does not have designated smoking areas in the resorts, #2-if you happen across a person with very bad body odour (which is quite common at WDW) do you run to the nearest CM and complain that people aren't bathing often enough or haven't applied antiperspirant or do you move away? I have came across people that would cause me to vomit if I didn't hold my breath or move away from them, but I'm not going to let it ruin my WDW vacation and I'm not going to waste previous time of my life complaining to whoever will listen. Now, I don't have a medical problem but if I did, I guess I would be extra careful and do what ever I had to do in order to not breathe the smoke. I would know that there definitely will be people smoking WHEREVER I went. Although they should not be smoking in a nonsmoking room, if that were the case I would most definitely complain, and the people that smoke in nonsmoking rooms should be the ones given the dirty looks, comments, etc. not the people smoking by the pool or overhang at the main building as they are doing absolutely nothing wrong.

Mmmm...in other words, you're a smoker. :goodvibes Don't worry--been there, done that, couldn't understand what the fuss was all about, either (until I quit smoking).

I don't think this is all about people complaining about everything. For me it's about complaining if I have a non smoking room, and people are smoking right outside my door. I wouldn't say anything, if someone was smoking outside a smoking room, or in a non enclosed area (and it's pretty enclosed just outside the cafeteria's, because of the overhang.I was talkingnn to a smoker today, and she said she wishes they had smoking areas near the pool, and other areas, as she realizes many find her smoke offensive. We were pretty much trapped in our rooms at POP this morning, and the old smoke was pumping through the air vents in the bathroom..and not for the first time. When you walked past the non smoking rooms in our section, often times when people had their doors propped open (which were a lot during the heavy rain today), they were smoking inside...near the door, but inside as well.. These are non smoking rooms..and these types of people give considerate smokers a bad name. I ask for a non smoking room for a reason, and shouldn't expect to have smoking around me in the non smoking rooms. For those smoking outside where smoking is allowed..I won't say anything, but I will move if possible. I don't expect you too..but I will, since you really aren't breaking any rules.

Exactly the point some of us were trying to make.. If the rules are being followed, there's really no reason for anyone to complain.. If they're not being followed, by all means, complain..

And I still think "designated areas" are a good idea.. Trying to get Disney to enforce them though is an entirely different matter.. :flower:
