Popular things you just don't get..

I don't understand why parent's would give their children made up names or alternative spellings to traditional names? My niece has an 'original' name and always has to repeat hersef and spell it out :confused3

Oooh yes, this one. When they register their children at school and look at me like I'm dumb because I didn't guess that their child's name has an apostrophe in it. Like '"Ree'gun" instead of Regan (that one is made up but is VERY similar to a child we had register at our school)

We have these too!:rotfl: Sometimes when I get my register in September, I can't quite believe what I'm looking at.

I watched the first series because my mate was raving about it but it was so full of plot holes and inconsistancies it just frustrated me.

I can't agree with this! I LOVE Krispy Kreme donuts - so much that I never go to Bluewater anymore as I can't resist the huge Krispy Kreme shop:lmao:
I think it can be nice.
But the really crazy ones are just stupid.
I once saw this woman *cough* CHAV *cough* shout at her twin toddlers.
You know what their names were? Gucci and Champagne. Seriously.

But I think some 'unusual' names are nice.
I always thought Halle was a nice name. But spelt as Hallie. (:

And as for Krispy Kremes...
They're like my life. xD

For me there are quite a few, including:

Lord of the Rings
Twilight
I'm a "Celebrity"

oh and Ironing. :rotfl:

I don't get Krispy Kreme Donuts - there is nothing Crispy or Creamy about them, they just taste like normal donuts to me .

The funny name thing - because my parents aren't from England and I was born here they wanted me to have a name which I wouldn't be teased for at school but that was still acceptable to my Grandparents and extended family (My first name is Natalie and my Dad's first language is French). As it is people say my name is a mouthful and my last name is quite complicated to spell but easy to say - I can't imagine why you would willingly inflict an impossible name on a child. People always have things to say about my name and it does get a little annoying!
I've known a few kids with *ahem* interesting names. A girl called Miami (presumably she was conceived there), another called Oceania but I'm the girl who was very nearly called Bibi Raquhia Jameela so I don't think I can complain! My friend's little girl has the middle name Mai and when she text me her name after she was born it took me ages to realise it was pronounced May and not My. She wanted to call her River London if she had been a boy because her favourite shop is River Island and she was conceived on a theatre break :rotfl2:. Don't get that naming a child after where they were conceived either. I would have ended up called "Cream Fur Rug in Front Of Fireplace". Needless to say my parents caused alot of psychological damage by telling me that :scared1:. And that rug was put in my bedroom until I was about 7! Sorry for the too much info people - I needed to share.

LOUIS VUITTON BAGS - I saved up £800 to buy one just because I felt I "needed one". Then I came to my senses and realised it was ugly, fairly common and I could feed a small village in Africa with the amount of money I was spending. £6000 for a suitcase. All I'm going to say is, don't fly BA with your Louis Vuitton luggage if you want to see it again at baggage reclaim!

ive thought of another one

Debt and/or Credit !! i fail to understand why people would willingly borrow money they havnt got to pay for things they dont need :confused3

I partly agree with this, especially people who go into debt/borrow money for a holiday (not exactly a must). Having said that mortgages are debts & there are many people in the world who can't buy a house outright to start with.

I have seen people struggle with debt & it has made me be more careful with money, if I can't afford it, I save for it.

I can understand people who get credit if its interest free, I do this. I already have the money to buy it but I can earn interest on it & then settle the bill when its due.

i didn't count mortgages we all need those unfortunatly ;) but yes going into debt for luxuries like a holiday ...no thanks !

I always tend to ask how May/Mai is spelt now at nurseries etc, as Mai seems very common now, also Maia instead of Maya.

and kripsie Kremes are nothing like normal donuts,:lovestruc I have a card to get some a dozen orginal glaze free with any dozen in January which I must use when I get back from WDW. DD hates Donuts though.

Me & DBF wanted to call our child River however can't because of DBF surname being like the clothes shop. Though he doesn't understand why we can't use it. We have unusual names picked for future children however they are real names.

That is another thing I don't "get". The need for everyone to own their own home, people think it is odd if it is not what you are aiming for in life. I would hate to feel tied down to a building.:confused3

I rent my shop premises, begrudge every penny I pay. Now paid for it at least twice over after 20 years.

House, after 20 years its just about paid for. Cost £40k(+interest) worth about 150k (was 200k:rotfl:) to rent, they are about £450-500/month.

So I am the opposite on that one, don't get why people rent. DMIL has rented same house for past 40+ years, dread to think how much she has paid.

I don't mean everyone, people who get a mortgage they can easily afford however I think some people would be much happier without having a mortgage over their heads, however it is the "thing to do" owning your own home even if it does cause massive stress paying it off.

Here are a few of mine

Crocs (ugly plastic things :rotfl:)
Pandora Bracelets (ducks for cover ;))
TV Soaps
Twitter
Farmville etc on Facebook
Ricky Gervais (he's about as funny as piles :lmao:)
X Factor/Britains Got Talent

BTW, great thread :thumbsup2

I do understand this, and on some levels I do agree with you, but can see both sides. It does seem to be a British obession though, in other European countries nobody owns the houses they live in.
I was bought up in Victorian Central London House that was rented for a real pittance from the Crown Estate and was probably worth Millions, but my parents were sensible and also had their own small property elsewhere whereas the parents of many kids I went to school with scraped a living with more than one job to pay a mortgage, and sadly many failed, lost their homes and all the while they had no enjoyment in their lives. The money my parents saved on zero communting costs (walked to work in city and west end) was all put to good use. Sadly, the house no longer stands, it's a Starbucks! Mum owns outright the home she now lives in.

I also agree with you Wayne, DH was adamant he never wanted a Mortgage as he had seen his parents struggle with it all their lives and only have enjoyment in their lives in retirement, so we both worked hard before we had our children, saved well and bought our house with cash = 0% interest and 0% stress. We were skint for ages after ::yes:: Our house has doubled in value in the ten years we've had it but it doesn't matter it's our home and we have no plans to sell it. They are £1200-1600 a month to rent.

I think it is just peoples reactions when we say we don't plan on buying anytime soon. At the moment we live in an area with an excellent secondary school and that is the most important thing for us, that DD will be able to go there in 3 years time(anything worth buying here is massively overpriced!!). We don't just want to buy a house for the sake of owning a house.

I think the home thing really depends on your situation.

At the moment we rent, and although a year or so ago we were a bit down about it as we have friends that own, they do so because they got some of the 100% mortgages and are now in £20-30k negative equity.

Where we live in teh current market we would need at least £30k deposit, so until something changes with mortgages we shall be renting!
