Our DS11 has played for 2 years....not Pop Warner, but a similar league around here. In fact, the Jr Hi doesn't have football through the school- the kids play the rec league.
Expect.....hard work, a tired boy, and lots of cheering. Yes, he could get hurt. DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, run down to the field if you are a mom. This is HIGHLY embarrassing and could cause death from embarrassment for your son. Let the coaches deal with it- they will call a parent if you are needed (Yes, I learned the HARD way!)
Expect discipline, but lots of fun. The coaches around here are tough- but fair and kind. They will push the boys to work, but then engage in lots of praise, even if you lose.
Brush up on your football knowledge. Your son will expect that you know the game as well as he does. Football for Dummies is a great book (I now know what a Safety is....!)
You will sit through the game in ANY weather. Football players are tough...so their parents better be, too!
Be prepared to battle grass stains and stitch up torn uniforms. You won't win the stain war- but you might win an occassional battle!
No matter how much sisters love their brother, picking dandelions is more fun than watching their brother play!!!
Close games can cause near heart attacks, no matter what the outcome!
Expect some parents to be over zealous and rude...it happens everywhere. Let it go!
Have fun, and be encouraging, and cheer, cheer, cheer! Who knows....today Pop Warner, tomorrow he could be making the next " what are you going to do after winning the Superbowl" commercial!
