If you are in a restaurant here you say "I would like a Dr. Pepper or a Diet Coke." But if you are thirsty and talking to someone it would be,
I need a Coke
regardless of what variety you drink. Also people who drink regular Coke usually ask for a Coke and if the place only serves Pepsi they will say we only serve Pepsi products.
soda is multiple questions......what kind of soda do you want.......well I would like to have a diet pepsi caffeine free......or my hubby wants a root beer.......and my mother in law likes diet ginger ale.......all are sodas but different types.....
Everything in this "neck of the woods" is called Coke. Primarily because Coca Cola has a hold on the market. People just do not drink Pepsi products unless it's "the Dew," which we Baby Boomers find repugnant. Visitors are easily identified as "not being from these parts" when they ask for a "Pop" or "Soda." Once asked for a burbon and coke during a visit to a hospitable new neighbor from Wisconsin. You guessed it - they ruined the burbon with tonic water! They now keep Coke on hand just for us. Gotta love the English language!!!
