Is it really necessary to have a preferred room? we don't mind walking and I am wondering if spending the extra money for preferred is worth it?

No. Nothing is very far at Pop. Around 10 minute walk from room to bus or food court or even across the bridge to Art of Animation for their bus and food court.

That said, my husband insists on preferred so he can quickly get his morning cup of coffee!

Lake view, standard room would be my preference.

I think it is worth it. I don't mind walking typically either, but a Disney trip is not a typical day. After walking miles in the parks the last thing I want is a hike to get to/from the bus stop, or to/from the food court.

5 minute walk to my POP Standard Lake View room that is quiet as a mouse! Would never pay preferred there.

My quiet preferred room was 1 minute max to the bus stop. I walk all day long at work, and I walk all day in the parks, I want to be a bit lazy at my resort.:cutie:

No it's not necessary. I stayed in a room that was right across the parking lot from the main building/check in/food court/gift shop/bus stop. I can't remember what section it was in but it was quick and easy just walk across the parking lot. My room even was on the parking lot side, which wasn't an issue since I was only there for 2 nights and basically got up, got on the bus and when I came back went to bed. I may have gotten breakfast one morning from the food court and taken it back to my room to eat but otherwise I didn't use the food court.

As other's said, not necessary... but it was kinda cool to walk out of the room, take steps, and be in the pool.

so I can request top floor, lake view for a standard room?
That's exactly what I requested and we got a great Lakeview room in the 70s section. So quiet and a short walk to the main building. Perfect!!

To me I would rather have a lake view than a shorter walk thank you

There isn't a single resort at WDW that we feel the extra $$ for preferred is worth it.

Personally, I prefer the non-preferred rooms at Pop. I hate being by the main pool at any resort - too loud for my naps! The first time I stayed there, I requested top floor 50's section. I got a great, peaceful room, that was even closer than some of the preferred rooms. It was less than 5 minutes (stairs included) from the bus stop. I don't think I would ever pay for a preferred room...
