Pool space hogging

I won't confront either. But, it is a BIG reason I choose the resorts that I do. I hate the towel game. It makes me angry that people are so "entitled." So, I seek out places to stay where I won't have to deal with this. Such places ARE out there. And, even though they exist, there are STILL people who insist on playing the game. But, since there are plenty of spaces, it makes me LOL at their insanity rather than get angry that I can't find a place to sit because people have chosen prime spots for their towels to rest.

I do as well. Last beach resort I was at my room entitled me to my own cabana on the beach. No worries or stress, it was there when I needed it.

I agree with you that just a towel is fair game. If you've seen a chair for more than an hour that has just a towel on it, go for it. Where I draw the line is throwing someone's belongings off a chair. Nobody has the right to do that.

If you put personal belongings on a chair at 6am and then LEAVE the pool area, don't be shocked if your stuff has been moved and someone else is using it at 7am. That's like putting you coat at a counter service table at 4pm and expecting the table to be available for your use at 5pm after going to the pool for an hour? That's also unacceptable. The places are just reversed.

I think that's what your room is for, isn't it?
Not really. I wear sandals and a tshirt when I go to the pool. I'll also have book with me to read. So when I go in the pool, what am I supposed to do with all the stuff?

If I saw someone's bag or flipflops or some other personal belongings sitting on a pool chair for an hour I'd bring it to lost and found and tell them that someone must have left the pool area and forgot their stuff.
Those chairs are for people, not for their crap. Use it with your body or lose it as far as I'm concerned.

But what are people supposed to do with their stuff while they swim? Like a PP said, I have a cover-up, phone, flip flops and refillable mugs. I am not going to cart all my stuff into the pool with me LOL! If I go for a swim/play with the kids in the pool for over an hour I expect my stuff to be there when I return.

I think if you are in the pool area, it's okay to place stuff on a table/chair while you are swimming. If you plop a bunch of stuff down at noon, leave the pool area to go have lunch, go to a park, take a nap, etc. and just want to be sure you have a spot when you meander back at 2:00? That is what I think is wrong. Problem is, how do you know if someone is physically in the pool area or not?

I think we all agree that you can't save places with just a hotel towel, it is impossible to know if someone left it behind hours ago. But personal stuff tells me they are in the pool/pool area. That's the rule I go by anyway, I am too busy on my vaca to watch and monitor somebody's personal belongings stalk their chairs and time them to see if/when they come back.

If you are using the pool for an hour, you are there using the pool. I think its rude and selfish to take a chair for an hour to hold your stuff when there are other people going down there to actually use the chairs.
If you are going in for a dip, nothing wrong with that, but if its for an extended period of time then you aren't using a chair, your stuff is, and IMO that isn't right. If the pool isn't busy and there are chairs for people to use, fine but if its crowded and you see people looking for a place to sit or lounge then you being are a selfish entitled jerk.

Well then the resorts need to come up with a solution. A pp mentioned lockers which would solve the problem. But people need a place to put their stuff and there is no place other than the chairs or tables.

I agree, but if a person was ok with just leaving their stuff on a chair somewhere, they should be okay with leaving it off to the side somewhere. No need to take up a chair with stuff, but we all know they aren't using the chairs because they have nowhere to put their stuff. They are putting their stuff on the chair to lay claim to it for the day.

If I get up and get down to the pool when it opens to grab a lounger I'm entitled to use that lounger until the pool closes as long as I'm in the pool area, assuming nothing is posted to the contrary.

If I get up periodically to use the pool or hottub or to go to the pool bar no one should be taking my chair.

The example the op posted is different than this though.

If you are using the pool for an hour, you are there using the pool.

How would you know whether someone is in the pool, at the beach, in the bathroom, buying drinks at the beach bar, in the gym working out, or in their room napping?

Thumbs down on charging for the lockers. I don't know that they even need lockers. They could have a "cubby" system somewhere (themed of course) for people to put their belongings.

Yes, a cubby area would be perfect.

I assume you would have already seen the chair and noticed no one has been around for an extended period of time already and that there are no other available chairs. In this situation, if someone leaves a bunch of stuff and is really in the pool area, I would guess they would notice when someone was moving their stuff and let that person know. Most people will keep an eye on their belongings. Of course, some people will buy $1 flip flops and try to use them to save their seats while they go off and do other things.

That's one thing I've never figured out (this issue comes up all the time on cruise critic also). I've got way more to do than watch and see if a chair has been empty for 30 minutes (much less 60). If I've found somewhere else to sit, there's no problem, right? If I'm doing something else it doesn't matter if the chair is claimed.

If I have a chair I don't pay attention. The times where I noticed it is when I show up and there are no empty seats but dozens of lounge chairs with just towels on them. So I end up putting my stuff in a pile on the ground and seeing if anyone shows up to use any of the chairs. Obviously I wouldn't move a towel from a chair if there were other chairs available.
