Ponchos, which ones would you suggest?

Just trying to be prepared. Do you think it is better to buy a better poncho before leaving for WDW or should I buy one at the WDW if needed. I'm not sure what the cost is at the parks? I bought one there years ago during an afternoon storm. Of course I have no idea where it is now.

I'm pretty sure I will need one this trip. So what do you all think is the best thing to do. Whatever it is I really want one that is small enough to carry around with me as I will most likely be carying two other ones also.

Thanks.

I read somewhere on the boards here that the Disney poncho isn't as nice as it used to be. It is made of thinner plastic and is not as durable. I bought mine at the local zoo here in Milwaukee, it is thicker plastic but folds up nice and small. Made 3 trips with them so far and they have worked great! Since I carry both mine and DH's in my backpack, weight is an issue with me and they don't weigh that much. Mine at the zoo cost (I think) less than $5 a piece.

Have fun dodging the raindrops! :cool1:

I bought some at Walmart prior to my trip for $1 a piece. They held up fine and I didn't mind throwing them away before we came home!

We splurged on Walmart's $2.99 poncho's. They are heavier than the $1 ones, and can be reused a few times. We bought the $1 poncho's for a previous trip - only had to use them once (a great weather week) and they actually held up just fine - lighter to carry and fairly sturdy. Also, any sporting goods store that carries camping equipment should also have inexpensive poncho's. It's nice to be prepared, but nice weather is preferred. Have a great time.

Last year I went to the Target before visiting the parks. They had a nice selection of Disney stuff including ponchos. I can't remember all the characters that were available. I do remember that there was Mickey and Pooh. I can't tell you how many times people stopped us wanting to know where to get the Pooh poncho. I can't remember how much they were but I know they were cheaper than the ponchos in the park.

Just went to target today and saw they have Disney Ponchos Yellow with Mickey and Gang and they have pink ones woth the princess, I believe they were one size fits all and they were 3.99, they look sturdy not like the flimsy ones I buy my hubby for his fishing gear, does are so thin!

If you really want to travel light, go to a Dollar store or Dollar Tree, and get the really thin ones. They are cheap, and lightweight. Then you can pitch them before you leave. I bought some at Big Lots that were $.50, and never used them. Back they go for the 3rd trip in December.

We always bring the $1.00 walmart and Taget ponchos from the camping sections. We buy like 12 and when we use them for a ride we just throw them away afterwards and don't need to worry about balling them back up. :cool1:

balling them back up is the thing that concerns me the most about the ponchos. I do not want to be carrying a lot around all day and I thought ponchos would be good because they could fit in my purse. But is it really difficult to get them back together? Do you have better luck with thicker ones or does it matter?

Got eight hideous ponchos at the dollar store, 2 for a buck, was glad to throw them out when we were done with them.

hi
another vote for buying the cheap wear and chuck them variety 2 for a dollar. good for water rides as well.!! only 18 days to go1 :cheer2:  :cool1:

I vote for the really cheap ones that you use once and then pitch.

Out of three poncho's I bought at Disney only 1 had more than one use. We still take that back and forth to the park but it is HUGE even balled up compared to the really thin (but flimsy) ones I bought in the camping section of Walmart. Those are the consitency of a plastic sandwich bag but for one use they do the job. :flower:

I use both kinds. I bring about 5 of the $1 ones. If the weather is supposed to be nice, then I stick one of those in my fanny pack. That way if a 'spot shower' pops up, I can throw it on and then toss it. But, if I know the weather is going to be rainy, I will bring my Mickey poncho. (think I'm off to Target tho to check those out!!). I do hate the way you can't refold up the Mickey poncho, so this is what I do (thanks to whoever it was that originally posted this suggestion last spring). I bring a small WDW shopping bag, the size that's about 8x10 or so. I stick my fanny pack strap through the handles of the bag and in goes my poncho. It is a good fit and even if I have to stuff it back in when the sun comes out, it fits better than trying to get it into my fanny pack. And it is always handy but not really in the way.

We spent $5 out of necessity in Branson one year for Veggie Tales ponchos. They are embarrassing (because I'd rather be Larry, the tall one, this fat girl doesn't need to look like the short tomato! :rotfl2: ) but wow those suckers really have held up! We've used them on every vacation since (including every day last year at Disney). We just let them dry overnight in the hotel room then roll them back up for the next day. And we get recognized for having characters other than Disney ("hey look, it's Larry and Bob!")

We do like one of the previous posters. If it doesn't look like it really is going to pour, we bring the $1 camping disposable poncho. They are pretty thin, so I don't know how well they would stand up to repeated wearing. But since they are so thin, you can throw them in your fanny pack. Everyone carried their own. We also brought mickey ponchos from a previous trip with us, in case it looked like a really rainy day. That never happened, so they stayed in the hotel room.

A couple years ago I bought an Eddie Bauer Rain Poncho at Target. It was in the sporting goods/camping section. It's khaki, hooded, gore-tex, very lightweight and can be folded-up into a small package. I think I paid around $14 for it. I'm rather petite and I bought a man's large so it is just long enough to cover my shorts. when folded it is no larger/heavier than the plastic mickey ponchos that they sell at the parks for $6.

It's actually like this without the pants http://www.target.com/gp/detail.htm...in=B0007CG4X8&AFID=Yahoo&ref=tgt_adv_XPYD0100

Anyway...It rained 3 days straight and I was sooooo glad that I had this jacket instead of a plastic bag to wear. Now I bring it with me everytime I travel.

Aren't the Disney ponchos up to $6 or $7 now?? We also buy the cheapies. 2 for a $1 at Dollar Tree! I don't even want to attempt to refold them.
