Ponchos or Umbrellas?

another poncho fan here. Other than walking in the rain, anything that will stop the rain is more likely to be a bit on the warmer side. DH initially sneered at the ponchos I had at DLR and took the umbrella. I just smiled and popped on my poncho. Not stylish but let's just say within 15 minutes of navigating the crowd with the umbrella, even at his height, he asked me if I had another poncho. I rest my case.

I have used both. I carry both anyway (the umbrella is just as much for the purpose of creating shade if necessary). It was pouring rain and we just wanted to go from one entrance to the other so I took out the umbrella (we were the only ones not hovering under an overhang or inside someplace). It was drizzling while we were waiting for the fireworks one night so it made more sense to use a poncho. To me, it is all about personal preference and the situation. My traveling umbrella is super light and fits in my bag no problem.

I take both on the trip, but base what I carry on the park I am going to and the weather forecast. Since I live here, I do have a good nylon poncho, which is more comfortable than plastic, but a little harder to carry. I have three different size bags with me at the hotel as well and my "rainy day" bag holds the poncho nicely and has a water bottle pocket on the outside that holds a compact umbrella perfectly. I stick a gallon ziplock bag in the purse to hold the poncho if I need to put it away wet, but the nylon dries so quickly that I don't have to use it often.

Obvioulsy wind plays a factor with the rain, but I just can't fathom sweating all day wearing plastic ponchos in that heat and humidity.

It depends on how hard it's raining & if you're riding outdoor rides (think 7DMT, BTMRR, Everest, or any of the spinners). Many seats on rides are very wet if it's raining AND you can't put up an umbrella on a ride so in those cases a poncho is a must. If you're careful you can tuck the poncho under you when you sit down to avoid having wet shorts the rest of the day. If it's not too windy and you aren't riding any outdoor rides, then an umbrella can be an option. Also I prefer an umbrella if it's a light rain or starting and stopping a lot because it's easier to put up (to me).

If the rain is predicted to be more than about an hour, I'll sometimes bring an umbrella, I really hate poncos.. If it's colder time of year, my hoodies are all waterproof so I'll just use that..

Ponchos or rain jackets of some sort also have the added benefit of something to sit on it you are sitting on a curb waiting on a parade or a show. The MK FP site for the FWs used to be the rose garden, I can't sit on grass since I'm allergic to it so I'd pop out my poncho and spread it out.

I guess it's not against the rules, but to me it's a bit inconsiderate (I don't want to say "rude", that's a bit too strong) to use an umbrella. Umbrellas will just get in the way and inevitably will poke someone.

Yes, it would be rude to say someone cannot use an umbrella. Amazing that dh & I have for years always packed & used our lightweight umbrellas and have never poked anyone - we're very watchful and considerate. We also don't walk around in downpours - just wait it out -

Umbrellas shunt the rain off onto someone else. Think for a minute before using an umbrella.

And--- ponchos don't ever get anyone else wet when you brush by them or sit on the bus with them on??? I've gotten a good soaking by inconsiderate poncho wearers! Think for a minute when using ponchos also.

I agree with other posters about the umbrella, it's really uncomfortable to be around someone with an umbrella in a crowd. We've been poked or rained on by someone's umbrella.

Again, above answers. Most poncho wearers are not even aware of others around them. They flare out (ponchos) from your body and brush anything that is anywhere near with water.
Some people can only see one side - theirs.

As for wind, we are not rainy weather park goers, showers, yes, rain that sets in, no, so we usually have no issues with wind.

Umbrella's for us. We have tiny ones that fit in DH's pocket of his cargo shorts.
We dumped ponchos last summer when we had long rainy days and had to take them off for all the indoor rides. Went that day and bought umbrellas and that's all we've used since. We got these smaller ones so we can go without bags
