Poncho on Kali?

I wear one and don't care if I look like a dork. I figure I won't be seeing any of the people again. My son hates when I wear it. I am pooh size and I will say that the poncho doesn't keep all the wetness off me but at least I am not walking around drenched.

Hey bring your poncho, I did. If you think you will look like a dork at least you will be a dryer dork than most folks! Nothing worse than wet undies all day.:rotfl:

I got the idea of wearing ponchos on this ride after seeing others do it and realized how smart they were. Now, we always wear them when we ride it. You will NOT look dorky. Just very smart!!!

Okay, I know I'm anal, but I can't be the only one wondering whether "poucho" = "poncho". Is there someplace where they actually call them that? The OP used the term spelled the same way like 7 times!

I agree, wear the poncho! And heed the advice about putting it under your rear, and then wrapping it around your legs so that when water splashes up from below, then it doesn't charge up under the poncho...

Thought I had it cased...came equipped witha poncho, hubby carried the sandals in the backpack (sweet guy that he is), we changed out of shoes and socks into sandals, sat on the poncho, giggled our way through, and then poof! First major splash...water up my poncho!

Users of ponchos, beware! ;)

All fixed with an edit.

As an alternative to the poncho....I usually wear a bathing suit under my clothes and the quick dry shorts someone else mentioned - board shorts or mens' swim trunks work well. I used to have a suit that was PERFECT for this ride - it was a dark green tankini with a texture to it. It really didn't look like a bathing suit at all, and was cut rather conservatively. During the day, I could wear it as my top on it's own. Since it was a tankini, it was comfortable to wear all day. (think bathroom breaks) I had a great open knit summer sweater that I could put over it, so I'd take that off before Kali. If I put the sweater on, it was perfect to wear to dinner. With Khaki shorts it was perfect.

I also second the flip flops, Tevas, Crocs or a similar type of shoe that does fine when wet. I've seen lots of people wear those cheap flip flops all day at the park too, but I think that's a bit much. They just aren't supportive enough for all that walking. You can throw them on for the ride though. The CM's on Kali are pretty serious about telling you NOT to take off your shoes while you're on the ride.
Personally, I'm just not into Kali when the weather is cold. It's a lot more fun when it's hot out. If it's hot enough, the right clothes will dry in a matter of minutes. I do think they should add more blowers tothe rest rooms though. Too many times I've seen people hogging them with soaked jeans in hand - UGH!

For me, the only fun part of a water ride IS getting wet!!! Especially so on an all too short ride like Kali

Agreed.

But the biggest problems with getting wet (WET) at DISNEY (without proper preparation) is that most guests are a long way from "home," so if they get DRENCHED, they may have to either suffer all day under difficult conditions, or give up a great deal of $$$ time returning to a hotel room and finding (hopefully) enough replacement footwear and other clothing.

I will never understand why people go on a water ride designed to get you wet, then wear a poncho so they won't get wet. Defeats the purpose of the ride:confused3 If I don't want to get wet while at AK, I just don't ride Kali that day. JMO

I was prepared to get wet my first time on Kali, wore the right clothes:cool1: , quick dry. I have rode Grizzly River many, many times. I have never got more drenched that on Kali:eek: :boat: . There was nothing about my body dry. When I walked I left a stream of water. People looked at me with such pity:sad1: LOL I bought a new tshirt and the cutest pair of khaki cargo shortsprincess: at a stand next to Kali (wonder why it was there), went to the rest room to change and my underwear was so wet it was even streaming water down my body. I had to take off all my underwear or it would have left my new dry clothes wet!! So I went all day in AK with no underwear (:thumbsup2 My hubby kinda liked that hehe) So long story short WEAR a poncho.

I agree with the "wimps" reply. If you don't want to get wet, don't ride. We go to Disney several times a year and always ride Kali. Murphy's law dictates that whoever sits by mom (me) is going to get the wettest because mom always gets drowned. The only time I didn't was when my mom met us there. We figured her grandmother status outranked my mom status!

You're on vacation - live on the edge a little! Your kids will love it.

Yes.

I've tried to convey in my posts about Kali that this is a real possiblity.
Those in the "getting wet is the FUN part" camp may not fully grasp that not EVERYONE in the "raft" WILL get this wet.
Not every "raft" will get this wet.
But there is a real possiblity that quite a few guests MIGHT get SO DRENCHED that they could jump INTO THE RIVER to help "dry off." ;)

And that, when you are away from home and in the midst of attempting to ride other attractions or go to a restaurant, can be a bit "inconvenient."

:)

reading this thread has given me no hope for leaving this ride dry... My DF saw video of this and said "we have to do that!" I have never done it in all my trips and don't ever want to. I'm not a fan of rides that leave my jeans soaked and stuck to my legs, I don't even like when that happens to me on Splash Mountain... But hey, he's never been, I guess I'll have to sacrifice. crap.

I don't mind getting wet on rides. I would be miserable if I got drenched. I will probably wear a poncho and ride it. Our DSs want to ride it and I want to watch them laugh and have fun. If it wasn't for our DSs, you would never catch me on Kali!

I love the getting wet, and if I had the option of just lying on a bench for two hours afterward until I was completely dry, it would be fine. It's the chafing that is the problem. Even with Body Glide I would be in agony in about 20 minutes if I walked around the park with wet shorts and underclothing, and the pain would ruin the rest of the trip.

This question reminds me of one of the times I've ever met a jerk at WDW.

It was EMH night and family without the bracelet was cutting through the line. I think he was trying to go from the exit directly back to the front of the line by hoping fences. (I don't remember exactly where it was or how he got there hoping fences) I remember the father (Jerkman) looking at me defiantly like "Yea, what are you going to do about it." Whatever.

Jerkman ends up in our boat and we put our ponchos on and doesn't Jerkman start to give my DH grief about the ponchos. My husband is very laidback and never loses his cool so he does not respond, which REALLY made this guy mad. We ride the attraction in silence all of us getting drenched. After this is over we are exiting and Jerkman's daughter about 4 yrs old is crying because she is so wet and uncomfortable. It was cold outside. I felt so sorry for the little girl I didn't make any loud rude comments about how nice it was to be dry. The little girl has enough problems with Jerkman as a father. The mother never said a single word, poor thing.

This happened years ago but I still remember his face.

My stance on this is very simple(call me a wimp if you want:) )...

If I want to get wet, I'll go swimming in a pool or stand in the rain. The good news about my strategy is that I don't have to stand in line to get wet. I don't have any interest in touring the parks in any state of wetness(shirt, shorts or shoes) nor do I want to waste park touring time going back and forth to a locker in order to change.

Splash mountain is not as bad, but I saw some people come off the ride with wet clothes which looked very uncomfortable.

Just my 2 cents.
